The 944 is off the road...at last!

I had purposely avoided naming the garage, but I guess it's out the bag now! [:D]

Obviously I need to confirm what's happened before I challenge them. Hopefully I can find a part number or work out what width it should be. I'm not sure what rights I have though as the parts were fitted two years ago.

John/Rob - I hoped you were right about the belt being too wide. I measured it and found it was about 19mm wide - I think that's right (according to google the 16V belt should be 25mm wide). I'll give TWG a call tomorrow but I can't imagine the conversation going well;

"Hi TWG, erm my timing belt that you fitted looks knackered. I'm refusing to drive the car in its current state so I can't take it to you to investigate...what are you going to do?" [8|]

I think it might be easier and quicker for me to just take the hit, replace the offending parts and take my time rectifying the oil leak. I might even paint the cam box if I have time [;)]

Andy - No worries. It seems they have a reputation already[:D]

Gerry - I hope I can get it sorted. I might just have to deal with the timing belt and leak and drive around the clutch issue. The head gasket on the MGF hasn't gone yet (it's only a matter of time) so at least I'll have something rear-wheel drive to turn up in.

Simon I might have some time on Saturday to pop over to have a look at where you are at right now. Give any help and advice if necessary for what it's worth. Are you free at all?

Sounds good Rob. Dani has offered to cook [;)]

I wonder if Andy's up for some food and standing around watching [8D]

Andy, Simon. We will make some calls tomorrow as Elliot has asked if I can pop over his place Saturday also to take a look at Gavin's project. Not sure about the afternoon as I have some work to do on my own but thinking we could do the morning then I could get back to my place in the afternoon.

Yeah lets call. I'm at Elliot's Saturday am too, he wants to look my turbo over to check if Gavin has all the bits for his

I thought I'd give you guys an update on the timing belt issue. I've replaced the balance shaft oil seals, both belts and both tensioners and rollers. Unfortunately I'll have to take it all apart because the belt is still running off the cam sprocket....

Another pic showing the state of the old timing belt.

It was rubbing against the front cover.

There was a slight give-away that the rollers and tensioners hadn't been changed for a while. The balance shaft roller was like a 50p coin. I thought they had been done when the belts were last done, but I was pretty new to the scene back then so I clearly didn't ask for the right thing.

The leak seems to have come from the balance shaft front cover o-ring seals.

And this is the source of the belt misalignment! I didn't realise it at the time, but the crank sprocket was installed the wrong way round. I took this pic so I could remember the 'correct' way to put it back together - which is why I have to take it all apart again!

At least it's clean now though. Bilt hamber surfex hd is brilliant!

Only off the cam sprocket or is it too big elsewhere? From the part number can you confirm that the car has the correct cam sprocket?

Glad it's looking less oily now Simon! Did TWG invoice you for rollers? I would have thought that they would have done the whole lot

Simon. I think it's got the right cam sprocket, but I haven't checked. The crank sprocket was definitely on the wrong way though. I took it all apart and put the crank sprocket back the right way tonight. Once it's all back together I'm quite hopeful it will be fixed.

Andy. The invoice is correct for what was done. I'll blame inexperience and excitement that the car was ready for me missing that. At least I know it's done properly now. I wish I'd discovered the crank sprocket issue before though. I definitely would have got TWG to foot the bill for the replacement belts!

Now starting to get really frustrated. I just can't get the balance belt right. It's either wailing or skipping teeth. The car generally sounds rough now too.

I can't be arsed doing this job for a third time...

Has it definitely got all of the right (correct engine model) parts fitted? The previous owner was a skinflint know-it-all so theres always a chance that something unsuitable was bodged on.

This is what prompted my original question about the cam wheel.
