The Dubai 24hr Race - Jan 13th & 14th 2012.

Day 3 and it must be practice & qualifying............

I hope you might have been watching on MOTORS TV or listening on Radio Lemans as well.

Quite a few sessions on track today, up to 5 hours or so BUT we have had issues! In amongst all this we have to get 5 drivers qualified for both day and night driving.

Our second man out in the first session was clipped by a 997 and rendering our car stationary -- a broken rim and steering track rod. Back to the paddock on a flatbed. Time was lost in the repair and the geo had to be re-done.

Then new pads were installed to be bedded in for the race BUT these endurance pads were a tiny bit too thick and when heated were binding. More time lost identifying and correcting the problem.

Finally, in night quali there seemed to be some drivetrain rumbling, then the car became very difficult to handle when accelerating or braking. Checked loads of stuff, sent back out with someone who has driven the car a lot - pronounced undriveable. Broken diff or LSD. We do have a spare diff but it is from a streetcar, so no LSD. Over half the night session was lost and 2 drivers did not get in the car to qualify but a dispensation is expected........... hope so as I am one of them!

Phew! ...... so after all that we have qualified on the grid as 7th out of 10 in our class -- we do have a larger re-fuelling allowance than some cars in our class, because they are faster. This extra fuel should help us run longer between stops (up to 4 hours)- a very good thing in this lark. We plan to do the whole race with 12 stops only and 6 of them will require fuel.

There are a few more issues flying around ....... but an update will be posted when I know more.

I am of course supporting Mr F and P Morris, but my second favourite team are the Dutch ladies in the heart covered car[;)]

More coverage on Motors TV uk at 9pm..
Go Mr F!

thx guys - mid-day here and the race starts in 2 hours. I am 3rd driver in the car doing the first night time stint from 18:00 to 20:00 (14:00 on in the UK).

I was asked to make the driver plan by Cor for our car, ie ahead of one being done for the Lotus ...... amazingly it was left unchanged and the Lotus driver plan fits around us !! NB this was an issue as Hal Prewitt and Richard Verburg will spend time in both cars -- also, drivers must rest for at least 2/3rds of the time spent in the last stint, so you can guess at the issues.

I might try and lurk behind a TV camera today -- watch out for a nerdy guy in a red shirt and shorts -- ha ha!

30 degrees today and the wind has picked up, I suspect that sand might become an issue off line.

I have had a confirmed Mr F sighting already during the Interview!
Looking forward to watching more footage later!

Just Found an Iphone App that shows the Dubai 24hr,its Free!Footage on the website is brilliant aswell!

Looks like they're running 44th overall and 3rd in class at the moment. [;)]

Looks like the #131 BMW finished 47 overall - 7th in class. It actually did better than Cor's other car, the Lotus Evora which finished 61st, 16th in class.

Good morning ....... have had a decent nights sleep and packing up ready to fly home today.

I will do a longer report when I have a bit more time and can create a decent bit of writing.

I have had an amazing few days, the racing was something to behold, even though we were in one of the slowest cars.

I had calculated that 21 laps per hour including pit stops would get us a podium, we held 4th in class for a long time and were just ahead of this schedule, even after 3 punctures on track. After 19 hours there was a bit of noise from the left rear wheel, various things tightened up and our quickest driver then went out .. a short while later we had a failed wheel bearing and broken driveshaft on the same corner.

Various spare parts were pulled out and a quick repair looked on the cards, however a mixture of slightly damaged associated components and one crossed thread on a driveshaft killed it for us after +400 laps. The Evora had a gearbox failure a good deal earlier.

My schedule for a podium required 501 laps overall, check out the results in A2 class and see how many laps the last podium place achieved ........... damn and blast!

One of the result pdf's here:

Anyway I had the best seat in the house watching the race, I had 2 long night stints and kept out of trouble, exceeding the target laps per hour for the team.

The sight & sound of groups of Lambos, Mercs, Ferraris and Porsche's going past me time after time will be my most abiding memory. To have mixed it with that lot and not had any contact was a a personal high ........ just love this endurance racing lark!
