The price is right ? (no this is not another 944 value thread !)

So I have made an enquiry about getting the bottom edges of my cars front wings sorted out (will need some cutting out and replacing of metal I would say) plus while the car is there getting a front end respray (including bonnet and mirrors).

Quote has come back as around £3500 plus VAT...so my question is based on peoples experiences does this sound a) About right b) A real bargain c) A total rip off ?

Bearing in mind the body shop in question is "darn sarf" where labour rates make your eyes water...Am planning on getting other quotes but very interested in feedback from the 944 folk out there (and any one else who wants to chip in !)

I'd say get a quote from somewhere else. It would probably cheaper to book a couple of days off, take a short break somehwere else in the UK, stay in a 5 star hotel, pamper your Porsche and still have change :)

I use this guy Stuart at Classic Conversions but he is in Rotherham so a bit of a way for to come but would be much cheaper. Him and his brother run the garage from repairs to full rebuilds. Mob 07745927269

That's high. I'd expect that to be more complete sill replacement, and almost a full respray! If it's just repair to the front wings and a front-end respray that's silly money. It sounds high even if it was two new wings in the price. I'd try Daytona for an expensive but top-notch job, MK isn't too far, or you could try the guy who did mine, just outside Wycombe, [link]http://www.classicandcustomworks.co.uk/[/link]. He's one bloke in a workshop, but prices are more sensible and he works on some exotic stuff. He seems able to fabricate anything, so the wings are a doddle.

Holy smokes. I got inner and outer sills both wings and rear quarters done for 900 plus some other minor bits. I would go somewhere else.

Speak to Dave at Daytona, Call Mark at Richardsons in Colchester That is glass out full respray money Had both my rear quarters, rot cut out weld in new metal all done for £300

Another vote for c) here. My full respray was £2300 but that was with me doing all the stripdown and all the refitting. I would have thought around a grand for painting front wings, bonnet, badge panel and front PU. That would be on top of whatever you spend on front wing repair/replacement.

I too suggest giving Dave at Daytona Coachworx in Stevenage a call. What you've been quoted sounds high.

has to be C exactly as others have said its £4200 when the chancellor gets his cut. [:(] I'd add that Hourly rate is one thing, but productivity rate is another. How many hours to repair a wing trailing edge...? properly... soup to nuts... 8 hrs per side fair? If so you can work up from that and add the other paint work. George 944t

Hi Jon, I took the liberty of speaking to Dave, (Daytona) it is expensive he thought you were getting new wings fitted, Dave will be at Rutland if that helps. Cheers

Jon, I'm waiting for a quote for sills from a recommended bodyshop near me (so not too far from you - actually where are you?). When it come sin if its nay good I'll let you know David

They are tajking your pants down and rodgering you !! where abouts are you based ? I could get that done up here in Cumbria for around £1200 (Cash) and it would be a top drawer job !!

Thanks for the answers chaps they have all rather confirmed my own thoughts on the matter ! Will certainly be contacting Daytona would be good to speak to them at Rutland and will contact Paul McN's suggestion too. Am also thinking about talking to Retrorestorers in Banbury. David L am between Marlborough and Swindon would be very interested to hear how you get on with that quote too !

I won't even mention the amount they suggested doing the sills would be - use your imagination and you won't be too far off. Mine seem fine but thought I would ask while I was there !

2 x Genuine Porsche Wings £1400 2 x Genuine Porsche Sills £300 Still leave a massive chunk to fit them so I say like others get another quote and expect it to be under £2000

My car needs similar work...what is involved in doing a reasonably decent job, is it cut out rot, weld new metal, smooth with filler, then paint?

I'm with the others here, I could get two new wings from Porsche and get my guy to fit and fully respray for that. He's near Southampton, pm if you want details. Good luck.
