The rebirth of LIL (again)

Paul, very sorry to read about the damage, - but good to see the repair progress.

If I may say so, the guys doing the repair need to get the Door Trims away from all the dust, grinding & welding thats going on.[>:]

The 944 bodyshell is very well constructed and it shows when the sill is exposed like that, its so deep in section yet still quite light. Porsche designed them, but Audi made 'em really well[:D].

Time to resurrect this old thread [8|]

Well I saw the old girl on Friday and they were just finishing masking up ready to spray her on Friday afternoon, then into the oven to dry and leave her all weekend. They had decided to redo everything as I was not happy with so many little bits (blummin Porsche owners [;)])

I've just called the owner and he gave the paintwork a good inspection today and says it is pretty near perfect straight out of the gun [:)]. They now just have some final finishing to do then refit all the trim and paraphanalia that has been removed and I am going down to inspect the work on Thursday (and pay the bill if I'm happy [:(]). All being well she will then be trailered round to Jon Mitchells Garage for the next stage.

We believe the only mechanical bits that are bent are the steering rack and track rods, but we shall see. Then it's fit new brakes, fit a few other bits and bobs, a quick oil change and some more tuning on the Dyno then I can have her back [8D]

Any idea of a date yet? [:)]

Looks like you're going to beat me getting my car back on the road after all [:D]
Fingers crossed it's a nice simple fix for the mechanical bits.

I can't wait to see LIL back on track [8D]

Can we start a book on who turns up at Frontrunner in their own car? [;)]

Heh heh heh [:D] and if we do are you going to put it through your pre purchase guide for us and state that the bodywork is all original :ROFLMAO:

[:D][:D]

Mine should be back in time for me to take it out and see y`all at Frontrunner and invariably get my first stonechip on the new paintwork [&o] I did think about getting it Armourfended but £££££`s [&:]

ORIGINAL: Hilux

but £££££`s [&:]

True, and not only that but all the ones I have seen really do look very poor. Super shiny and flat Porsche paint covered up by a bumpy textured film [&:]

Why did your car need such extensive body/panel/paint work? I think I'm missing something here, but didn't you have a thread saying how good your sills were and just needed a local paint up???

The sills thread was a very old one that got bought up again recently. I'll leave Paul to fill in what needed doing recently but it was fairly extensive [].

The really nice Turbo for sale at RPM, Darren's car, had some sort of film that was invisible until you were right up close, and even then only the edges of the film.

Ah but you're not a painter [;)] There were a few companies showing their wares at Ragley last year and they all had cars out front showing off how good they were [:'(] To a man they were all really bumpy and textured when you started looking closely. I know they are there to protect your lovely paint and prevent costly resprays, but what's the point if you can't even enjoy your own glossy paintwork [&:] You're just preserving it for the guy who buys it after you.

John, this is the reason the car has been in the bodyshop since August last year [] new wing, door and quarter panel:

The other thread about sills was my wifes S2

Ouch! Lucky to only have damaged those panels then!

Sorry for confusion, your and your wifes car are hard to distinguish on digital photos.

Ouch

First time I've seen that Paul

Never mind soon be back on road

Maybe you'll make Knockhill again

Very lucky. It hit the tyres absolutely side on and spread the load across the whole left hand side pushing all the panels in. Eight months later and I'm getting excited to have her back again [:D]. All I have to do is repair the scratched up wheels.

Yes, it was panel damage only and looking back at the beginning of this thread in August they had the new panels in place after only four days and should have been ready to paint at that point if it wasn't for a delay getting the door to them. At that point things were looking great for the quoted two to three week repair (ha ha ha [8|]) but then I rejected their first attempt at spraying and it all went downhill. We're now at the same point, with me about to go down and pick over it with a fine tooth comb again tomorrow. Crossing fingers I'm happy this time

I`ve seen armourfended Trevors and Lotii (and a new Carrerra Gt which has the whole of the front of the car and I mean the whole front covered in the stuff) and apart from v close up it is indistinguishable 3 feet away if done properly.

I would guess its probably about £1800?? ish to have the whole front PU done properly??

Any updates on LIL Paul? Is it now with Jon or is the paintwork still not up to to scratch?

is the paintwork still not up to to scratch?

Ha ha - nice choice of words [:D]

I saw her on Thursday, it's all finished and I am now extremely happy with the work the bodyshop have done [:)] I had a good long chat about all things involving painting with Gerry who did the work this time. The original painter has some health issues and is on long term sick at the moment.

Hopefully Jon should have her at the end of next week for his side of things and then I'll have her back shortly after.

There is still a whole list of minor things I will need to sort out to get her back to perfection - n/s foglight lens, n/s mirror, stoneguards, turbo badge on the back, Porsche script along the back, n/s door glass, window winder mechanism etc. The door card is slightly curved and if it doesn't straighten with heat I shall have to find a new one in the right blue/linen colour. I'm also hoping my speakers still work as I had only just fitted them. The wheels need repainting as well because they are all scratched up from the gravel.

When you guys see here at Frontrunner and Cotswold Rally she should look amazing [8D] (and if Jon has his way will have a lot more power [][;)] )
