The ultimate rebuild

I actually saw knifed webs or a boat tailed case at hedingham castle this weekend - looked great but it's too late for my project...

Supercharging is on the list for sure. Although not on this rebuild. I've actually chickend out of several choices in favour of standard replacements e.g. mahle P&C's, 3.2 cams. This is my first go at one of these cars and i've already blown enough to be worried about destroying the engine...

I have noticed the s wong maf kit(it's the carbon fibre one i think isn't it) and if i still have room on the plastic i'll probably go for it...

I've had a great time pulling this thing to pieces and the project is now at the stage where I am sealing the case halves(will be tuesday now as the washers and nuts that should have been in my kit were missing)
I've replaced bearings,oil pump, complete intermediate shaft assembly, all case studs and chains

Ivor searle's did a good job on the cleaning for me and I collect the heads from them next week.

I think the car must have had at least a top end rebuild at some point as the guides were 1st oversize unless of course they can leave the factory like that?



 
Boat tailing is carried out to the case. Helps Aerodynamics of the crankshaft & rods while moving.

You could go slightly more aggresive than the stock 3.2 cams without messing up the AFM. Not sure how much more (if any) aggresive you can go with a MAF.
 
cheers - although I have just had a very tough evening. When I had the case cleaned I said "any studs that won't last another 20 years can you remove please" which of course means remove them all!! anyway, bearings have assembly stuff on them, curril t is on flywheel seal, case has loctite sealant on it, through bolts have silicone around each o ring and have been hand tightend when I notice that three of the studs at the pully end of the case are not sticking out of the holes...aaaarrrrrrgggggg I had been supplied the wrong ones...it was a nightmare getting all that sticky stuff off...

as it turns out when I took the thing apart I realised that i hadn't put in the the oil seal that goes between the two case halves....Fairly certain that would have knackered my pressure...

anyway it all goes down as experience...
 
Hey Alex, Have just read through all the threads on your rebuild, just to let you know I have just completed the same thing on my 3.2 1987 Carrera. Only I had to do it twice, as the crank failed after it was sorted but not hardened, after an 80mph failure on the motorway. So had to strip it down after 500 miles, put in a new crank, bearings, stripped down the new oil pump, re sleeved the intermediate shaft because of wear, and have now got it back on the road. One tip I could give you is to balance the conrods to/bottom if it is not to late, and make sure (as you probably know) get everything spotless, and ready before you start to put it together, then clean it again, and then do it. Sounds like you are enjoying it, I know I did, and learnt a lot. Hope you get as much satisfaction out of it as I did.

Yes, exactly.. It's amazing how many people do these things on an engine that rarely sees action above 5,000RPM!
 
is that you in the pp this month Scott? I did get the rods checked for round before they went in again and they were fine, so assumed they should be ok? and yes, I have been going clean crazy with everything I touch!!! Have you put yours on a rolling road yet?
 
Yes it is I (ha), didn't think it was going in, because I hadn't heard from the "Post" for a while, so it was a nice surprise when I looked through the mag yesterday. From what I learnt you cannot be to clean, and yet I still have an annoying three leaks, but I am not too worried, they are not to bad. Haven't had it on a rolling road yet, there used to be one in Chester, but I am not sure if it is still there.

Which case sealent did you use? have you tracked the source of your leaks? just wondering as I'll pay more attention to those areas on mine - I've also read the dempsey books which have been a great help for this sort of thing...
 
thought i`d chuck in an update. The engine is now done except a bit of sheet metal and a couple of breather hoses which should be here soon. Got a mehanic from opc to come round and give it a proper check over. Cam sprokets were wihin .25mm and lift on intake valve at tdc was 1.23mm which i think is as close as i could get!!! Gear box has been rebuilt with new syncro gears and i`m just waiting for the body to be completed. Just heard tonight that it has had it`s topcoat and laquer this week....cant wait...oh - ordered can can red carpets with can can inserts and black leather on seats with red piping...should look proper 80`s

yes it's about a month or so old - Lancaster Porsche Cambridge...was a bit more expensive but comes with a lifetime guarantee...I'm not planning on selling the car so it also seemed like a worthwile investment...I'm well chuffed with the service, They have put a huge amount of effort into the car and always ring me at each milestone so I can pop round to take some pictures...This one is after lacquer pre polish - I'm starting to lose sleep because I am so excited...

Alex, that is more money than I paid for my car 9 years ago. You must really like that car! They are great cars.
Make sure you get an agreed value insurance policy just in case though.

I'd be interested to know more details on a Ruf engine costs as it was one of the thoughts I'd have for my 3.2.

i've been researching superchargers over the last few weeks...hoping for a good response from a company called hi-flow in austrailia(based on an autorotor)
 
You do realise that superchargers work best with low compression pistons - and you just put new Mahles in yours (presumably std euro compression ratio).

If you want to keep your Mahles and liberate some hp change the cams and the intake to ITBs. You will need an ECU.

You have probably spent months planning this but have you got advise from experts at any stage?
