Porsche claimed that something like 80% of the 968 was new compared to the S2, although I don't know how much truth there is in that!
I suspect that a lot of that was down to small parts like nuts and bolts counting towards the total, and probably stamping a 968 part number on a 944 part made it a new one!
Not knocking it at all. Porsche were trying to string the model out for a few more years as they had no obvious replacement until the Boxster arrived. With a global recession, the PR around the 968 had to be exceptional, and it did sell a good number of cars. Testament to the range that the press loved the 968: with facelifts now every couple of years, and new models every 4 or 5 years, getting `5 years or more from the 944/968 is very impressive.
