Thinking of a 944

Just a thought Paul.....if you haven't found something before, why not take a trip up to the Rutland meet? It's a bit of a schlep
from you, but probably the best and timely opportunity to see all models and talk to many owners. I must try and make the effort
myself as I haven't been to a 944 meet for many years [:)]

I'll probably get flamed for this, but so. My first Porsche was a 2.5 944 Lux, which was a nice drive, although modern hot hatches are quicker. It did not have a vertically adjustable drivers seat - so SWMBO bitched 'cos she wanted to drive it! So, purely for that reason, I swopped it for a 16v 944S - and found that engine has no bottom end. Below about 3.5k rpm you might as well be driving a Rover 1. OK, above 3.5k it sings and is a lot of fun, but in the real world you can't drive like that. Within about 1 year I chopped it in for a 968 tiptronic coupe. Unlike the photo above, 968's ARE fully galvanised, so in 16 years of 968 ownership I have only had 1 rust problem - and that was caused by a sloppy windscreen fitter.

So - my advice would be don't think of a 16v 944S until you have driven one. The S2 is a good car/engine combination, and the S3 (AKA 968) is even better (IMHO before McN banns me!![:D][:D]) The advice about sticking a borescope / camera on a stick down the vent in the base of the B pillar applies to all, it lets you see the inside of the sills (open the door, you'll see the vent, it unclips from the top).

Are 968s differently galvanised? I thought they were just younger! [8|]

Galvanising isn't 100% effective for ever, my IW trailer has bits of rust in the corners that attract dirt and moisture at 10 years old.

Just seen this that provokes some thoughts, particularly the very low valuation!

I wouldn't mind a look to compare it to mine (without wasting the owners time of course!) as I'm in the North Beds area.

If it's as described it's obviously around your price bracket + a bit....

Looks like that was posted a year ago...

The very low valuation of one of the contributors was ridiculous even before the current warm glow of supposedly ever increasing values of 944's we are currently experiencing.

We see loads of posts on here about rust on 944's, particularly the sills and the cost of getting proper repairs done. Conversly, although 968's are not completely rust proof, I've not seen a lot here or on 968uk about rust problems with 968's. OK, mine are/were spoiled a little - but the coupe was our main car for the first 3 years of ownership so, although garaged when not in use, it was used in all weathers. After that it was a fine weather weekend car mostly, although it did get used come what may if I was home but wife needed the other car. The cab seldom sees wet roads! As I said, in 16 years of 968 ownership I've had 1 rust problem, caused by an incompetent Autoglass windscreen fitter - who was clever enough to hide the evidence under the seal so it was not apparent until the paint bubbled about 2 years later!

Oops, apologies, I didn't realise it was 2014, I was actually getting excited as well!
