Thoughts on oil

I'd be interested in the difference you see using the 10W60 over the previous grade you used. If you could tell me the difference you notice in the oil pressure as the engine heats up, and if warmer weather makes a difference as the seasons change and we experience warmer ambient temperatures. I hope you can keep the thread going to satisfy my curiosity, or maybe there is no discernible difference?
 
Hi all have not been on here for a while but have just done a 12000 mile service on my 3.2 and have been looking in to oils.
I have also read that we should not use fully synthetic oils on ours as they dont contain Zinc which helps to.
I was using Castrol Magnetex and as i was getting this for free have change it regularaly.
Does anybody use the Valvoline VR1 in 20w 50 ? My hand book recommends 20w 50 also.

1.What are the benefits to using a racing oil versus a regular "street legal" oil?

The Valvoline VR1 Racing & "Not Street Legal" racing oils contain additional additives for increased horsepower and reduced friction on metal parts, provide extra wear protection for high compression/higher horsepower engines, and include fewer detergents than regular conventional motor oils.

2.What is motor oil with zinc?

The anti-wear additive simply referred to as zinc by most car enthusiasts is actually short for Zinc DialkylDithiophosphates or ZDDP. Its primary role is to prevent metal-to-metal contact between engine parts by forming a protective film. Despite being referred to as zinc, this additive actually contains zinc and phosphorus, with phosphorus performing the anti-wear function in the motor oil with zinc.

3.Why is it important to have the zinc/phosphorus levels in motor oil changed?

With ever increasing limits on emissions, automobile manufacturers have tightened emission control systems on newer vehicles. This is one of several factors considered when the American Petroleum Institute (API) sets standards for motor oil with zinc. The current API standard is SM which replaced the previous SL classification. Because phosphorus can poison a vehicle's emission system, the level of zinc is lower for current motor oil.

4.What is the controversy surrounding the amount of zinc in motor oil?

Many hands-on car enthusiasts and engine experts believe the lower levels of zinc in SM motor oil is causing excessive wear in older style push-rod and flat-tappet engines. This is despite the fact that all new motor oil classifications are intended to be backward compatible. This has resulted in the widely accepted belief that modern motor oil is not adequate to protect older engines.

 
Here's another view; was down with my Indie having some work done and I asked him what oil he recommends.

He said for early air cooled up to 1989 he only uses high detergent single grade SAE 30, Castrol, Shell, Total etc. He has been building and servicing Porsche engines since the early 70's and that this was what was originally spec'ced by Porsche.

What are your thoughts on this? Never heard anyone talk about single grade oils before.

He did make a point about using high detergent oils in air cooled engines though. Can anyone shed any light for the reason for this?
 
From my understanding of air cooled, rather than water cooled engines, they have larger tolerances to manage greater expansions from cold to running at high operating temperatures. For example the tolerances in the bores may let more combustion gasses pass into the crankcase and the higher level of detergent is required to manage this. Perhaps the engineers, and oil experts can confirm.

I've hardlu used it since having the Porsche oil put in but it seems that the oil heats up to operating temperature a bit quicker and the oil pressure is slightly lower . Also, the pressure guage remains the same at different revs. Porsche claim that the oil is for Porche's that are left standing for a while and then used quite briskly.
