Time for more power, where do i start?

Since MegaSquirt; although I can think of a couple of other off-the-shelf solutions that offer a lot more for your Vitesse money. Id favour SimTek who offer suberb ECU able to do everything youll want for between £570 and £860. Emerald ECUs cost about £660 too, which is cheaper with far more potential (you can even trim each individual injector!).

Im constantly surprised by 944/951 owners limited horizons when it comes to performance. Lindsey racing and their terrible turbos and comedy output claims, Xxxxxx for selling a lot of their tat and one or two other usual suspects.....
 
Standalone vs piggy back - it's horses for courses. Yes standalone offers you much more possibilities whereas piggy back will always have limitations due to it being based on the standard motronic. It all depends if you want to unlock those extra possibilities. Yes, you can buy a standalone like Megasquirt and simply substitute for your stock ECU and get the car running. But that is really not the point of standalone. What Vitesse does (in my opinion the only piggyback kit worth having) provides the ideal compromise for the person who doesn't want the hassle and faff of going full standalone and will provide as good a level of tune as any standalone is capable. And currently running in at £780 (last year dipping as low as £610 when the $/£ exhange rate was at it's most favourible) it is superb value.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that with Vitesse you are simply buying a kit of parts that have been packaged together (like alot of other suppliers kits). It is a fully developed and mature kit that does deliver what it claims. John has invested a huge amount of development time and money - far more than most people will invest with their standalone installations, to get it optimised, so you are buying all of that as well. And from the very many customers he has had who all have raved on about the results you can't really be that surprised that many people decide to go this route.

I'm not knocking standalone - it is clearly the optimal solution, but it does require alot of investment in time and effort and expense on behalf of the installer and therefore not for everyone. The cost of the standalone unit is usually just the very beginning.
 
The original barn door type airflow meter is terrible, but there little point trying to replace it, because the DME isnt paying attention over 4,000 rpm anyway. My personal view (which I can substantiate) is that money spent on Vitesse and similar mass airflow meter kits is wasted on virtually all cars (I used to like the AMD hot film kit, although that had the same failings).


The vittesse MAF and chipboard allow monitoring of the airflow all they way through to the raised rev limit.

Hello everyone, thought this thread was dead and buried...anyhoo i plan to fit the chip tommorrow once i've got rid of all the nice cheap petrol out of my tank and replaced it with nasty expensive stuff. I once looked into the requirements of raising the octane level of fuel as a 'garden shed' operation but unfortunately it requires a Catylitic Cracker which is hard to come by unless you own an oil refinery, i digress.

Do i take it that a Vitesse MAF is not simply a larger replacement unit lifted from an old twin plenum SD1 Vitesse?

It had ocurred to me that the portal in my MAF is really rather small so i would be inclined to agree with Simon about it being dreadful, i was rather looking forward to hunting down an old Rover SD1 in a scrap yard...shame. Thinking about it though it wouldn't be all that far fetched to suppose Bosch may have made one for some car which has a larger portal. The potentiometer? output would always be proportional to the mass of air flowing through it so you'd just have a pot with a larger range presumably. I may look into this unless anyone cares to shoot my theory down on flames, [take aim, the rookie's just bought it sir].

I had considered porting and cam (Schrick?), especially in light of the fact one of my tappets rattles so it'd be rude not do so while the head's off really.

I'm open to any suggestions, preferably DIY, regarding the ditching of my current MAF due to the forum-wide concensus of it being crap.

Chip in, early indications are good! There doesn't appear to be masses more power, maybe a just noticeable tad, but the real difference is that all that the engine has to give is now available more of the time.

I used to get a surge at about 4000 but now the surge begins as soon as you gas it, it also used to wimp out at about 5250 but now i'm changing gear at about 5800 or so.

The definitive test will be the hill on the way to work tommorrow i used to crest it at about 97 so i'll see if there's any difference there.

Errr, no. Nothing could be further from the truth. I actually think he custom builds them and calibrates them accuratetly rather than simply pinching a MAF off a current production car and doing a Heath Robinson simple MAF to AFM signal conversion - which is basically what all other MAF kits do (with the exception of Scivision maybe).
