Timing Belt

What's the concensus - S2 Cabrio, timing belt was replaced at 94,000 miles in July 1998. Car now has 115,000 miles. Should I have the belt replaced or will it only need checking and re-tensioning. Going to France for a week soon and will do about 1500 miles.

I believe you should get them done every 40,000 ish or every 4 years which ever comes first.
I am sure some one will correct me on here if I am wrong.
I would get the belts changed prior to going. Just remember if you do they need retensioning after 1,500 to 2,000 miles.
Cheers
Lee

Wrong! We are going down to Bergerac to see some friends, just cruising the N and D roads, with hood down hopefully.

Aside from when it was parked overnight I didn't have my roof up last year at Le Mans for the entire week from leaving my drive to getting back home so you should be OK based on that.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]This year I'm also going to France soon but after the pilgrimage is over - spookily to the Loire area in my case and I expect we'll visit Le Mans itself as tourists.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I've never been to the Le Mans race weekend, altough I've been to France on Track Days when I had my motorcycle. Always felt Le Mans was too big and busy. No doubt someone will put me right on that!

The 'official' mileage for the retension is after 2500miles, I just had mine changed and they gave me a nice Porsche printed card reminding me when to bring it back in.

That should be perfect for after your French trip

How long does the timing belt on the 944 Turbo last? Is it labour intensive to get it replaced?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, everyone......

Officially lasts 40k miles or 4 years, whichever is sooner. Almost everyone I've known has prefered 30k or three years as a safer bet.

Cost, as part of a service not too bad. If you need oil seals, rollers or water pump get them done at the same time. I didn't, and my wallet learned the error of my ways....[][]

Remember, it's cheaper to get it done than have it fail, so check it's history.

I thought 48k or 48 months, but most people go for 36k or 36 months - same difference though really.

Get the rollers and water pump done every second belt change to ensure no nasty surprises. It's probably £300 for a belt service and about double for one with rollers and water pump.

Thanks, all. Just checking, as the belts were done and I have the receipts, but just wanted to check when they needed to be done again.

There were done 10k miles ago, which was also 2 years ago. I'll get them done again next year, based on what I read here.

Last time I looked at the maintenance booklet it said 5 years.

No, four is the maximum.

48K miles, although there's sometimes confusion as there's a 60K limit for the 928 in the same service book.

Personally, I wouldn't drive it until I'd had these changed. I think there are quite a few threads on here detailing the process. Good luck!
