Tiptronic Vs Manual?

Hi. My OPC tells me the tiptronic system really suits the 997 Turbo as its the only way the gears can keep up with the power! I've tested the Tip in a Turbo demo but theny only had a manual gearbox C4S demo to compare. My heart tells be it would be a sin not to have a manual. Is the manual Turbo gearbox the same as a C4S? If this is a really silly question.....sorry! My dealer reckons tubo sales are 50/50 manual v Tip.

I thought the Tip sales were higher than manuals ?? certainly are in the USA..
If your ordering new, then speak to them about the PDK and facelift.. it depends on your waiting time..

I'd personally say Yes the Tip does suit the Turbo due to the huge amounts of torque it offers..
It really depends what you want the car for, human nature says the manual will give you more connection where if you are looking at a City car then you can't go far wrong with a Tip... saying that , there plenty of people here that drive the cars and have Tips.... there even a few here that drive like tips but thats another thread..[;)]

You really do need to drive both and feel the difference.. saying that I can't help but feel that planting your foot in the carpet in a Tiptronic is going to take your breath away all the way to three figures

Who wants to be bothered waggling a gear stick around ?

If manual gaerboxes are so good, why don't F1 cars have them ?

Good point Tony, but I thought they had PDK hydro mechanical changing type gearboxes.. not Tiptronic..

and I'm glad I wasn't driving the one that Hamilton was driving today [;)]

i bet he wouldve rather had 3 pedals today as you say[:D]

however the rest of the year he was probably very happy with 2!!

the 997 tt with tip i tried was brilliant and is definately the one i am going to order-cant imagine needing anything more involving-or -fun

We've had several Tips (964, 993, 996) and I've driven several later variants as loan cars.

It's clever, but old 'torque convertor' technology and, IMO, all the various generations of Tip have been inferior to their manual alternatives (well except perhaps on a Cayenne[;)]).

Porsche have delayed launching their new DSG/PDK system. This is a proper paddle shift manual develoved from the Audi system. Porsche had some problems adapting it to work as quickly, smoothly and reliably as they required, but it is due to be launched next year. It won't be a cheap option, but it is likely to turn the tables and Tiptronic will eventually be redundant.

Just another thought; The 997 turbo is quicker at the 0-60 dash in a Tip compared to a Manual.

When was the last time you went from 0-60? Personally the changing of cogs makes one feel they are going quicker even if Porsche stop watch says otherwise. Just sitting there with the right foot planted and left hand on steering wheel isn't very involving IMO [:D]

If tiptonics are so good why don't the GT3 or GT2 have them in the option lists [;)]

By the way, brake-torquing starts are not very healthy for your Tipronic car, so I would never do more than a few times a year.

Obviously repeatedly dumping the clutch at 3-4000rpm in a manual is not particularly healthy either. My PDE track day advisers always recommended that you get the car rolling in a manual with normal revs, and then floor the throttle.

Thanks for all your input. I'm still swayed by a manual but don't have to spec yet. With regard to a new model. I found an OPC with a cancelled slot so an April build has been offered. Is any facelift due around this time?

Apparently yes as far as the standard 997 is concerned due out Spring 08 according to OPC East London ... Glad you have seen the light reference the manual [:D]

Facelift Turbo won't be out same time as Carreras. I would guess you wont get a facelift Turbo until this time next year.

I haven't reached 60 yet but I'm getting there quickly!

Having driven 'Autos' for over 30 years, I find Manuals a real hassle and if I am driving a manual I feel a complete wally when I stop have forgotten to depress the clutch. When I have done 'Johnathon Palmer' type days and Porsche driving experience days I have always selected a wrong gear at some stage, which has either nearly blown the gearbox or left me chugging along in 2 gears higher than I should have been.

Give me the full Auto for lazy driving or the paddles for enthusiastic driving anytime.

Having done that a few times...[8D]
I think its certainly seat of your pants type of stuff..[:D]

horses for courses... if you want to argue this out then surely the ultimate conclusion would be to have F1 cars that are fully automated, ie no drivers - self braking, self steering, etc, etc. BORING.

My understanding of the Turbo tip to manual sales is that these cars are according to sales, purchased by older buyers who tend to prefer autos.

If you are in the market, I wouldn't make your decision based on driving a manual C4S - it definitely is not the same. The manual clutch in the Turbo is significantly lighter than compared with the standard Carerra clutches.
