TMC Traffic Info on PCM

No rattles as yet, everything seems well bolted together. Have spent most of the time driving around in sport setting so harder ride should expose anything that is loose.
My biggest complaint is that the phone module needs all my numbers re-entered in it as it doesnt read the SIM card. £70k it should all happen automatically !!!!
Simon

Have had 3 SIMs in O2, Voda, Virgin and no problem are you sure it's not the SIM ?, It does take some time to read as it downloads all the contacts and messages.

Think Ive now sussed the problem, apparantly the wonderful sony ericson they sold me holds everything in the phone memory and not the SIM memory. So I have to re-enter everything.
Cheers
Simon

There will be a function allowing you to copy from phone memory to SIM, would save lots of time.

you ought to offer a consultancy for us techo idiots. Talked 02 into giving me a special number for just the car . Its last three digits are 997 so I will remember it.
I cant even work out how to put my cars photo on the forum as it keeps telling me the file is too big !!! P.S I am a PCGB Member as well R15 and thats not registering either.

Simon.
You need to use something like Microsoft Photo Editor to "resize" the photos. ("Image" menu, then "Resize"). The filesize needs to be less than 200Kb (check it using File Explorer). (Save it witha different name FIRST, or you will lose the original quality!).

The Register held its inaugural meeting yesterday at Porsche Cars Reading. During a very frank and informative question and answer session with Geoff Turrel, it was admitted that TMC works everywhere but France and the UK. It will be standard on MY 06 cars and may be retrofitted to MY 05 cars. Apparantly it is merely a DVD and possibly a software update. PGB are aware of our feelings and fingers crossed we get what most of us expected.

Other than that, if you read the comments elsewhere in this Forum you will note that the visit was most successful.

the mapping on my disc (dated 10.04) is all ok , m1 link everthing there it even has our close on which has been here 10 years but still doesnt show on the BMW disc

Yes, but that disc, asssuming that it is the same 10/04 DVD as installed in my 987S, doesn't know that OPC Sheffield exists or that OPC Nottingham moved some time ago!

New member to the forum - just picked up my seal grey 997 carrera S from the factory last friday. Whilst driving through Germany, Switzerland and France the TMC was working a treat. I noticed in Europe that when you press the Nav button followed by Set you get 4 options: RadioText,Configuration, TMC-ALL and TMC-Route. Having activated Sat Nav I pressed the Set button and then TMC-Route. I could see all the traffic problems on my route. Using dynamic routing I bypassed them all. However as soon as I'd crossed through the chunnel the TMC-All and TMC-Route options dissappeared from the menu list. Clearly all the bits are there and can only be the licencing!! So frustrating especially when you know its there!!

I hear that 997 manufactured from end of April 2005 are able to read MP3 discs and that there may be a way to instyall software upgrade on cars bought before then . Can you investigate and can all us old 997 owners press for the upgrade facility FOC.

Jonathan

Guys,

If it works in other countries, what could possibly need to be changed "hardware" or "firmware"-wise to get it to work in the UK?
It must be a licensing thing, plain and simple.

I guess Porsche Cars GB must be short of money or something...

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie poster here, although I have been a regular visitor.

Any update on the negotiations with Porsche GB on this, Just given them a call and was told that 05 customers wont be getting a free upgrade and will have to pay the full price as an option? I picked up my 987s in April and was dissapointed when I found out that the fuctionality was not avialable in the UK.

I have been told that an updated disc is required and a software update, not sure why this is the case if it already works in other European countries, surely it's just the updated disc with the licensing permissions etc? I was advised that If any dealers were found to be offereing the upgrade as a goodwill gesture then they would be asked to stop. I can't understand this stance, very poor customer service in my view.

Coolbox.

Hi Coolbox

If you are correct then it is quite scandalous. Is there any pressure that PCGB can put on Porsche to come up with an equitable solution?

Hi Jonathanw,

I hope something can be done as this type of stance is poor, as a first time Porsche customer I had hoped for better customer care. I received my info pack and a request for a deposit on a Cayman S yesterday, given this situation I don't think I'll be spending any more cash with them until I see how they handle this situation first.

Coolbox.

Hi Coolbox

What you are describing is a classic example of poor customer service. From past experience I have found that making a huge fuss just tends to get a dealer or manufacturer to take a firmer stance, so I will be pursuing the gentle approach.

However, my dealer should have records of the times I have asked about this pretty much from the time I got my car in November. I don't expect to have to pay for an upgrade. TMC has been a feature of PCM in the GB brochures and on the Porsche Cars GB web site since launch of the 997 and I believe that it would be found to be misleading if Porsche just played back the line that the brochure may show images of cars not for the UK market or something. To advertise a feature that fundamentally does not work in the domestic market and claim that was 'by design' would be novel...

I picked up my new 5 Series BMW last week, and it has TCM included with the media package. Why are BMW able to offer this yet Porsche aren't?
The PCM on the 997 is so much easier to use than the 'I' drive which appears slow in comparison.

Hi Guys

I agree that the situation regarding TMC is unacceptable. The sales publications says it works, but we know better. I will take this up, yet again, with Porsche Cars to try to get them to agree modifications to MY05 997s & Boxsters.
