To respray or not to respray

Any thoughts on the worth of getting a respray on a 31 year old 924?
I would be not be going for the full monty but a good tidy up.

My local paintshop wants to take it back to metal to do a respray.
Surely this will remove any galvanising too, so that the car will be less protected than before.
It there a galvanising undercoat available these days (that works).


 
They would normally use a chemical paint stripper leaving the galvanised finish unnaffected-probably an etch primer first followed by a hi-build primer,then the finishing coats.

They didn't mention this possibility - I got the impression the galvanising would be unavoidable 'collateral damage' - maybe I should shop around.
What is a typical price for a 'cosmetic' respray?

A fast 'blow over' could be as low as £500 up to £5k for a full strip to concours standard!!

Get three quotes but they will be lead by your desire and quality of final finish. You pay for what you get.

I'm budgeting £2 - £2.5k for my bare metal repaint plus some additional metal work.

I realise but, there must be many who had it done; I was was interested to see what people got for their money ( given in most cases its going to cost more than the car's worth).

Any more comments on preserving the galvanising?
 
I have just had to move my car from my mates shop due to the receivers going in!! Unfortunately its already stripped and partially prepped to bare metal. The new bodyshop want well over £3k to do a full respray plus a little metal work!!
 
Scarlett, R19's famous concours 924 was the subject of a windows out respray at Bodytechnics. Expect to pay in excess of £4000 for this level of quality
 
Been priced at £350 for mine, thats just flattening the present paint and flashing over a ncie shiny new coat, bit then that is with someone I kind of know
 
I think thats the kind of paint job which my car had done last a few years ago. Its now flaking off with every car wash I give it. Whats not flaking off has crazed with age!!
 
I've just had a quote of £2000 to £2500 from one of the "Independent bodyshops" listed at the back of PP.
This includes fitting 2 'new' wings and 'new' badge panel, most glass out (though not the windscreen if they can get the trim strips off), bumpers and other trim off.
Blocking back but not to bare metal (so existing galvanising should be safe) followed by a keying primer and 2 pack paint.
They are approved refinishers for a couple of the Japanese manufacturers but not Porsche.

Its a three owner car, with the first owner covering 130K of the 156K and a new short engine at 100K and (now) most of the mechanicals sorted, so I suppose it should be worth doing.

Now turns out that's plus VAT so its £2500 to £3000 which is not so good for a car that will be worth max £1500 when finished . . .

Having played this game before, do you ever wonder if it will ever be back together when its in its present state?

Approve of your decision to return it to the white/red paint scheme, that and the dark green/light green (with of course a pasha interior) are two of the classic finishes and I think unique to Porsche. I went round the factory in '76 when these cars first came out and still have a german brochure from then. There are at least 6 photos from different angles of a turbo with your exact scheme which I can send you if you PM me.
 
Will the shop do a deal for cash?? Can't be a lot of work out there at present or my mate with a 20 year business wouldn't have gone under due to lack of work!

With 100's of these cars going to the car grave yard at present, it may not make sense in the short term to spend the money, but as the fittest survive they can only start to present themselves as a future classic and firmer prices. A la 914's?! Your investment may pay off in the long run and you get to enjoy a pristine car in the meantime. There may be a time when good rare 924's actually start to out value 944's!!

I could have bought a 968 CS with the cash I have thrown at mine in the last year. I would still prefer mine over any other ...... he's says convincingly!!

I too have a few early 924 brochures with the original paint scheme, so thanks for the offer, but I may already have the same info.
 
Here's mine again, without most of its original paint!!

A full body respray will never make financial sense, but hey, I want what I want!!

So where its apparently back to bare metal, have they taken the galvanising off too?

Looks like you're going further than I intend too - the interior trim and carpets seem to have been removed. Wouldn't remove the front screen cos of the risk but the hatch has to come off if you're doing the roof.
How much have you budgeted for replacement trim or will it be reusable?

I've had a lower quote from another garage who is used to painting Beetles & Surfvans and the occasional Porsche. I use him for MOTs and mechanical bits where I don't have the facilities. I'm reasonably confident of his abilities and seen his work which I suppose is reassuring when deciding who's going to turn your car into scrap before resurrecting it . . .[;)]
 
I'm hoping that the priming and flatting will be done this week with top coats and lacquer by the end of next week. Although all the panels will be fitted for my return, I have to refit all the trim, lights, wiring, bumpers etc.

I stripped the interior as there is a fair bit of the 'fibre' sound insulation and tar coming out and a cage going in. I have also re dyed the faded carpets back to black. So a full refit to do in there.

The exterior trim is mostly good and being reused. Will need a new sunroof seal, can't afford door seals for now and boot seal is recent. The side rubbing strips are being replaced with black pinstripe in the short term and subject to how it looks may be permanent.

I already refurbed another set of alloys last year which are pristine now. I have a new set of 'old' font number plates ready. I also have a full set of re made full OEM spec decal kits from werk924.com. Not cheap but if the paint is being returned to OEM then the decals need to be right as well in my opinion.

I hope I can have it on the road by 12th March to go to the Ace Cafe. However I am sure there will be lots still to do before calling it 'finished'.

I didn't realise they did decals - I didn't think it appears on their 'shop' page - did you ask especially?

Having had to sell my 356 as a project after its complete respray due to lack of time and facilities I'm a bit wary of undoing anymore than necessary . . . so reluctant to go as far as you're going. I find its always easier to take thing apart than put them back together so they are better than before.

The shop page has been updated in the last few weeks and most of the decals have been removed but more fabric and trim photos have appeared. They can silk screen print to the exact OEM spec. The boot 924 Turbo was around £50 and the door sills were £100!! However they are spot on and far more appealing to look at than laser cut vinyl you find on ebay. With the money spent on paint it would be a shame to miss out on the finer detail touches.

I am not looking forward to rebuilding the exterior, especially as I didn't remove anything. Not looking forward to rebuilding the interior and I did remove everything!!
 
I wouldn't put too much faith in the protective qualities of 30 year old galvanisation to the shell.
Look how many cars are out there with knacked sills. If it was that great, none of us would ever worry about bodywork!
 
Carrera - did you say you're putting a 944 badge panel in? If so what are you doing with your 924 turbo badge panel? I'm looking for a 924 turbo badge panel for my 944. :)
