Told not to use Mobil1 ???????

ORIGINAL: Ian B

Apologies for the oil industry history lesson.

Ian

[:)]Ian thanks for the professional opinion much appreciated especially as I have loadsa stock of cheap Mobil 1 0-40 :ROFLMAO:

I find this very strange.

Maybe their margins on Magnatec are better[;)]

There is no comparison really. Mobil1 is a pao proper fully synthetic and Magnatec, well it's simply a Group III hydrocracked (modified mineral oil) with some addatives to make it polar.

I would use Mobil1 against Magnatec any day, it's simply a more superior oil!

0w-40 and 5w-40 are the most suited grades for these cars as they give better BHP, fuel economy and emissions. They also give better cold start protection and as this is where most of the engine wear occurs!

There are many Porsche Approved 0w-40's and 5w-40 however quality does vary due to the basestocks used.

I personally would not use Maganatec in a modern performance car, I would use a proper pao/ester synthetic for the best level of protection.

Cheers
Simon

I believe that Magnatec is only recommended for older engines. The fully synthetic TXT Softec is recommended for use in the contemporary cars.

Hmm... I think I was thinking they meant the fully syn (or as near as Castrol do...) in my original posts.

I would go for the Mobil 1 0W40 (UK) or 5W40 and 5W50 (both available in France) myself

Magnatec has no real applications, its all marketing with that one.

Cheers

Simon.

This comment about Mobil 1 being to thin goes back to when the oil was first marketed and old engines did indeed start leaking from just about anywhere possible when changed over to Mobil 1. This was generally a reflection on the engineering standards and not the oil, not something I think we need to worry about with our Boxsters

You familiar with the RMS issues Ian ?

Yes I'm aware of RMS issues, perhaps I should have said 'something we shouldn't have to worry about'. However, perhaps using Mobil 1 will highlight any potential problem earlier, before anything really nasty happens.

Simon,
You say that an ester based fully synthetic is the absolute best motor oil. However Mobil 1 is a pao synthetic. What then is the absolute best, no compromise, money no object oil. I have read about Amsoil, I believe that is ester based.

Paul,

Yes the best are Ester/PAO blend oils, the likes of Silkolene, Motul and Redline to name a few.

Tech data on these here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Oh, Amsoil use PAO's. Poly alpha olefins.

Cheers

Simon.

Interesting thread. I always use Mobil 1 1/40 as the book says....but then I have had 6 RMS replaced so including th factory fit I am on 7th.
Maybe a thicker oil would not seep past the seal. Just incase your interested, I only get one or tow tiny drops on the garage floor per month
so it really is a seep.

Incidenatlly, Costco have Mobil 1 0/40 very cheap. I can't recall the xact price but its about £25 for 4 ltrs.
