Too much wine + Ebay = Porsche 944S2

I just had to tell someone about my latest purchase - I'm just so chuffed with it.
You know how its is: a late night quick look through Ebay at the cheapo cars that you have no intention of buying and then you see it...someone's listed a Porsche 944S2 under 'Classic Cars' instead of the usual 'Cars' section and consequently, there's no interest and the starting price is £1500. Move on to the auction end and it turned out that I was the only bidder and it was mine at that price. The reasons it was so cheap were kind of obvious: 167,000 miles, the seller's rubbish photos made the Azurite Blue and grey leather look even more undesirable than ever and the advert was thin on detail. I travelled up by train to see what kind of time bomb I had bought and the owner meets me at the station: must be some mistake though cos he's turned up in a superb 944S2, same colour as the one I've just bought - oh, hang on a sec...
Yes it turned out to be a cracker. A near mint grey leather interior complete with matching Porsche carpet mats, mint boot area and everything inside works, even the clock. And it has a cracking Sony CD player. On the downside, the paint on a couple of panels is less than perfect following a earlier respray but the car looks and more importantly drives superbly well. In fact its a total dream to drive, properly quick and free from odd noises and rattles - it feels likes its done 67,000 miles rather than 167k. The icing on the cake is that the seller handed over a huge carrier bag full of every receipt, every MOT and an owner's handbook pack complete with a fully stamped up service history. In total, there are over £15,000 worth of receipts.
I've checked the car over thoroughly and can't see any immediate expense needed. It solid underneath and it has a full set of Koni shocks fitted.
I'm now using the car as my daily driver and have added around 1000 trouble free miles in the last 3 weeks and its a joy to drive. I can't believe this car is related in any way to the 2.5 I had previously; its just such a big leap forward in every area. I'm about to service it properly and I've just fitted a spare set of larger alloys in place of the Design 90s originally fitted and I've yet to give it a really good clean - its rained or has been freezing cold ever since I bought it. Other than that, I just don't need to do anything to it (yet) so I'm just driving it or looking out of the living room window at it!
Are these the best value Porsches around at the moment or have I just been very lucky?

Both, they are very good value at any price but you could have got any amount of trouble buying without seeing it. What a great result, clean it up and let's see it! [:)]

Sounds great. 167K is irrelevant and not actually very many as long as its been looked after. Bonus the clock works.
I'm sure you have but check the last belt change and have a good look at the sills. All being well a good dose of cavity wax and you are set for the coming months.
Price is a bargain if it turns out to be a good un.
We need some pics, dirty (car that is!) or otherwise.

hiya sbloxxy, so good to hear you had a "result", cars sounds great, bet you had a shock when you first saw her in the flesh? and with all those bills and mots, good luck and enjoy her... regards jason p

Wasn't the car in question mentioned in a thread on here not long ago ? Sounds like a gamble thats paid off ! [:)]

Sounds like a car I watched on ebay a few weeks ago - it was up north in Arbroath I think. Well done you. Good luck with it.

Its got to be that one simkin, i was looking at that one too but a little too far away from me plus i was worried about respray cost if a simple machine polish wouldn't take care of. I got my 944 at a bargain price but my gamble was that the service history was lost over the years so it came with minimal paperwork but the car is straight and runs great.

I think my next 944 will be a S2 and fingers crossed i can pick up a cheeky bargain like you mate, the fact you say the S2 is like day and night compared to the 944 means an S2 could come along sooner rather than later lol.

Trust me m8ee at least 'one' PCGB member not too far away was well aware that car was on E-Bay , as mentioned there just arent a lot of folk actually buying at the mo [;)]

I hope she turns out to be a real bargain for you and in any case that you have a lot of fun !

Regards

Mas

Yes it was the Ebay one mentioned, for sale in Arbroath. If ever work out how to add a photo, I'll stick one on.

Cool, Is the paint work as bad as the seller described mate or is it easy to live with? Could it be sorted with a good machine polish?

The paint isn't horrendous but it needs repainting rather than polishing out. Apparently when it was resprayed, the guy managed to get runs in the paint on the rear wing; he attempted to rectify this by rubbing it down and got a bit carried away and now you can just see the primer underneath beginng to appear. Sounds horrible but actually looks ok until I get round to getting it painted.
Belts have just been done by the way.
