Took my car in for an MOT today.....

My most recent acquisition needs MoT this week - and the lights have stopped working today for some reason that I can't quite figure out yet. That's a fail, right?

Paul,
Wow that looks fantastic, all very new & clean. [:)] It will be great to se LIL back on the road some time soon.
I see from the stuff in the backgound that you opted for the Maplin Engine Management System [:D]

Here is a pic of the fully assembled engine

Are you fitting an aftermarket air intake or will you port match the original 951 intake ?

The standard intake manifold has been 'tidied up' to match the inlet ports of the head and for the immediate future the car will run on the original air flow meter and air box with snorkel. The turbocharger has a 4" ported inlet so there is some fabrication needed to connect it to the AFM and once it's run in and dyno'd there will be a MAF to replace the AFM

The standard inlet manifold's definately the way to go. Hone it out and match it.

There is an alternative item available, but after studying lots of dyno charts and talking to a very experienced engine modifier, it robs the torque without adding much BHP.

... Hone it out and match it.

I'm about to show my ignorance on these matters - what does matching it involve? Is it matched to the inlets on the head?

Phil

Without matching the holes in the inlet manifold and the holes in the head where it mounts are not exactly the same shape and size, hence there is less hole than there might be and a step. Matching makes them the same size and shape for better flow.

What were the other "alternative" items tested ?

Speedforce Racing and Broadfoot Racing also have their own inlet manifolds, and I think Powerhaus and Huntley did as well.

Not forgetting the fantastically expensive (but I think maybe quite good) JME (John Milledge Engineering) one.

I liked the look of the one on that race Kokeln 944 posted on here a few weeks ago that had four individual throttle bodies. I can't imagine it's particularly cheap either.

From memory the JME one has 4 throttle butterflies and is largely made of carbon fibre. It looks very sexy, but it's about $5,000.
