Top end rebuild just diagnosed

ORIGINAL: Gordon Attar

Either Ray Northway himself or more likely Paul (90%) will be doing the rebuild. You need to trust them as they only advise on rebuilds if they are neccessary, they will advise you what needs doing and they are honest about there assessments, more often than not they only do the top end. You need to check what is in the top end rebuild and whats not, a lot of people are surprised by whats in in Northways £3.5k rebuilds compared to some of the competitors, so it would be good to double check and post the answer.

From what I can see on this thread no one has questioned Ray's price or integrity. The base price of my own top and bottom rebuild was very similar to Ray's price. It included new valve guides, dialever head studs, cam chains and guides, piston rings, oil through pipes, main bearings, all seals and gaskets, reconditioning the heads and of course, oil and labour.

What it didn't include was new parts that were found to be worn out or damaged which for me were; camshafts, valve springs, top hats and retainers, little end bearings, split engine cowling, warped lower valve covers, crumbling heater hoses, corroded cat converter flange and various oil and breather pipes. It also didn't include stuff that I knew would need doing at some point but had been putting off (starter motor, clutch slave and hose some new tinware). It's the extras that take the rebuild to another level.

If none of these extras had needed doing I would have paid a very similar amount to the Northway rate. One could almost argue that if it's only the top end menu items that are found wanting when it's opened up.....it didn't need a rebuild in the first place.

What Steve said ^^^^!!!

Menu pricing is great, however it is the "whilst it is out/apart, would be daft not to" factors that ultimately dictate the final bill.

I had a similar experience to Steve, albeit without the camshafts thankfully!

Top end turned into top and bottom, which then turned into "whilst it's apart/out", with the added help of "would be rude not to do the RS flywheel and clutch" etc etc!!

Just go into it with your eyes wide open!

And yer wallet![;)]

How's the ol banger goin Nick??[:)]

Sadly sold!

Family circumstances dictated sale etc etc!

However, i shall return to the aircooled fold at some point...

I have first refusal on it and the guy who bought it is a top guy, real enthusiast who rebuilt an old SC before buying mine.

Hi Gordon,

I am very happy with and trusting of all the Northway team - straight talking and fairly priced. I guess they are going to have to take the top off and see what is to be found.

Thanks to all.

Sorry a bit off topic, but is this an issue on 993s does anyone know ? I have a 1994 993, which has 110,000 miles on it and almost the same engine as a 964 ?

Thanks for any answers,

Short answer is this is not a 993 issue at all.

Briefly, early 964's (can include 92 reg, 92 models usually ok) is that there was no gasket between the cylinder head and with the Ali block, this causes the leaks and more often than not the leaks are around the "through bolts" and occasionally one will have gone. Other main issue is leaking pipework. These two main issues were sorted out which is why people want J(check vin number) and K reg models as they basically dont have the problems.
Don't forget the Freudenburg flywheel.

But basically most of these should be non issues as of today, and it;s worth remembering you should only refer to the VIN, not the reg no:.... K reg can be 91 build.
