Track Day Frustration

All,
I, like most of us, have an RS with a Cup Pipe and Airbox, mine still has the Cat and static tests at 104-105db consistently.

I have one of Will's tips (thanks Jamie) which I have not got around to fitting yet.

I am getting v frustrated at the number of tracks that now seem to be limiting most of their days to 100db, Combe being the worst offender with one noisy day in the calendar as far as I can see.

Quick question, if I refit a primary silencer/airbox will I get in at the 100db days, will I notice any loss of power (or gain??), also if anyone has experience of the "Will tip" what wil that get me down to with the current config.

Despite my moaning I have fitted in four days so far Anglesey, Oultonx2 (inc RS day) and Curborough so it's not all bad.

Thanks and hope to see you at a track day soon!
Cheers,
Kevin.

Now I have removed my head from up my a*** I can see that PCGB are doing 3 noisy days at Combe - mea culpa, my questions still stand however.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,
My RS has a cat by-pass pipe and cup pipe but I run a standard air box.I also have a Will Norman tip and have never had any problems at Donington which runs a 98db limit.
Since fitting the tip I cannot say that I have noticed any loss of power. In fact a recent posting confirmed a loss of only 1.5/2 bhp on the dyno.

I tested at 105 at Oulton --- where would I get one of Will's tips ?

Sounds like a smoker's accessory ?

Do they still make pipe cleaners ?

Chris,
I got mine via Jamie Summers (his club ID is also his full name so you can search and PM him easily).

The tips are made by a mate of his called Will, no affiliation to "Wills" in so far as I am aware!

Jamie is able to source them for PCGB members on a goodwill basis, they are really nicely made in stainless with a removable silencing core, the current model trims 2-3db I think, he is also working on a different core to enable RSs with Cup Pipes to run on quiet days, not sure of current status on this.

On another matter, going to croft with PCGB in June, roughly how long is the journey from Chester (12 miles from Oulton) to Croft?
Thx,
Kevin.

Kevin,

For your information, my C2 exhaust and air box are completely standard and measures 98 db static. A bit boring I know but I get in everywhere without problems which suits me fine.

The Donny limit is 98 db driveby. My mate's GT3 is 104 db static and didn't have any problems with the driveby at Donny last time.

Chris, drop me a PM and I will pass it on to Will if you are interested in a tip........... (you may have actually met him - he was in the same garage as me at Oulton on the RS day. He drives the extremely fast Horizon Blue 964 C2 !)

Kevin,
Sorry, I don't speak "science" ;) If you mean what reading do I get ? Then it tends to be c.102 - 105 db depending on weather, meter, tester, how few revs I can get away with etc etc. This compares to c. 108 with the normal tip. I'm running decat and cup pipe with custom air intake for the MoTeC. My car reads 335bhp on Colin's dyno with the tip on, so I don't feel I'm losing our on much in the power stakes !!!!
I'm going to lean on Will to get the extra "bung" sorted out soon so quiet days should be possible soon ...........

Jamie

Jamie,
That's OK I dont speak "finance" - not very well anyway ;-)

You were bang on, that's exactlly what I was after, looking forward to the new bung as I really dont want to put the Primary silencer back on, with a stock motor I need all the help I can get!

Cheers,
Kevin.

People look at the tip on my car and say wow, what sort of custom exhaust system is that?! Bet it's really load!!!.....Bit of a let down when I tell them its a silencing end pipe.....The point is it looks great and it works!

102-105 is great considering you have the cone filter and the motec system etc Jamie. Everyone out there should have a Will Norman tip!

Shims are on there way by the way.

Not sure on your driving time Kevin. I'm expecting a 2 hour drive from junction 38 of M1 (Wakefield). Not sure if that helps you at all. Suppose you'll have to connect up to the M1 to go north at some stage of the journey.Depends how long that takes you to travel over from Cheshire.

Matt,
Sounds like 3.5 hours to me, have many happy memories of your area, spent my mis-spent youth playing gigs in the miners clubs in Knottingley/Kellingley etc. before I scarpered off to Uni,
Kevin

Thanks Matt, that's very kind !

As you well know, noise tests are somewhat of a lottery - unsurprisingly the reading tends to be closer to 105 than 102 normally. Touch wood, I haven't been chucked off track yet ..........

Jamie

ps Just booked onto the Donny trackday on 8th Jun, so will see you there I think ???

Oulton Park to Croft.

A49, M56, M6, M62, to A1 --- 1.30 if the roads are quiet ?

A1 north from Ferrybridge to A66 east (after Scotch Corner) --- then to Croft (fill up at the Shell garage before A66 to confirm directions and fill up) --- 1 hour if the roads are quiet.

If busy --- your guess is as good as mine.

I cruise at around 85 on the speedo --- probably 77 ish ?

With the trackday and the return, that would make it a long day ---

Chester to Croft -'bout four hours -plenty of B&B's in the area with off road parking.

I changed my Cup Pipe for a C2 silencer to bring it down to about 100db, with a Tudor mortar tailpipe for emergencies, prob worth about 2db.

With the C2 silencer fitted, you would only notice the marginal difference in power below 4200 if u knew the car before, above that, no probs, and that's where it stays anyways!!![;)]

Melv,
Thanks for the info, I will look into this since it doesn't seem to have slowed you down much[:D]
Cheers,
Kevin.
