Track Day Tyres - analysis

Hi Thomas

A lot of guys here use Mille Miglia Cup Replica wheels for their spare set of wheels. Available in correct size and off set and usually about GBP6-700 for a new set I think. For winter tyres, suggest you use a good road tyre or the Dunlop SSR track tyre (although the size and profile is not excatly correct, people see to use them without issue).

Check Porsche Post for wheels, Mr Tyre Motorsport in Birmingham for Dunlop SSRs.

You can sometimes pick up wheels cheaper used but they are often 7 + 9 x 17 rather than 7.5 and not Cup 1 design. Make sure the off set is correct.

Regards

PS - did you get any where with JZ Machtech?

Tom -Keep a look out in PP -you can usually pick up a gash set of MM's for about £200....

Thanks guys. Perfect info and I am already on the hunt. Mr Tyre did only have the Dunlop SSRs in 225/45 and 245/40. Does this matter technically and/or performance wise? The Mr Tyre guy claimed not. Should have done this pre JD. Then Mel.

On JZM. Had a discussion and got a bit of bland feedback. "Yes Mr J we can try something different if you like". In light of this I have not decided what to do.

I think the SSRs in slightly off sizes work fine. I have them on with no issues and I know many others do too.

No liability etc of this doesn't work for you!

Be slightly warey (?) of MM cup wheels. I fitted a set on my Beetle in conjuction with Porsche spacers on the rear and the bolts that hold the spacer on interfered with the recess hollows in the wheel which resulted in grinding some wheel away. Not Ideal, but from memory I only had the issue on one wheels.....

These are the wheels I am currently running while the Mags are being restored.

As for which tyres, IMO you cannot get a tyre that does everything. I think you need a good road tyre which doubles as a cold / wet weather track tyre and then you need something sticky for dry / warm weather.

I get the impression that the SSR's are very good but I am not sure how good they are when its really wet. At North Weald, I didn't feel disadvantaged having the S-02's although we weren't doing enough to get heat into the tyres and if we had been lapping a few times, it might hav been a different story.

Would it not be right to conclude that, although there no perfect universal solution, that the SSRs would be a clear step forward from the MPSCs on a damp day at this time of the year. So inclined to go for this.

On the MMs. Looked in the PP and could not find any. Called a place named PerformanceAlloys and they claim MM is out of business since Feb. So I continue to look for the wheels.

Though but I am trying to get this sorted out before the weeked since I am going to Brands on Sunday. Leaving other half at LHR for transport to Stockholm in the morning. One cannot miss an opportunity like this - no debate as to preference when it comes to extra-domestic activities - even if it is in the middle of the winter.

Again thanks for your input

Has anyone tried teh Pirelli Corsa's???

I used to have a set of Yoko 539's on my Golf gti that did a couple of trackdays... not sure if they do them in a 911 size though...

..currently have 2 sets of wheels... One set with MPSC's and the other shod with Falken FK451's fro the road and wet trackdays

Tomas,
I've been running the SSRs in 215 and 245 sizes (215 doesn't seem to be available from Mr Tyre right now hence the suggested 225) since the spring on road and track and so far have been impressed with the wet grip as well as dry. They have a much more conventional tread pattern than many of the road-legal track tyres, so can clearly shift more water. However, given the small tread depth even when new I would be very wary about using them in serious standing water (especially if they're a bit worn like mine !). I can't comment yet on how they perform in really cold weather, but I intend to continue using them right through the winter, so we'll see ! I'm going to be very careful - I managed to light them up the other day without trying very hard on a damp road !

Jamie
ps looks like you and Will had fun at Bedford the other week - lots of 'off piste' action judging by the pictures !!!
