Trickle charge

Richard Mine looks a bit like the one in the photo Clive has posted. As I posted earlier in the thread, it is badged "Porsche", connects via the socket in the centre console glove box and works fine. Unless yours is faulty I wouldn't spend (waste?) money on a different unit.

I have used a CTEK for all my Porsche's and Ferrari's and both service dept said to me the Ferrari one is just a CTEk with a red labelnstucknon it, and my local Porsche dearer said he same, in fact if you got here they had many of the show room cars connected to a CTEK. As an electronics engineers for over 35 years, there is no way a working CTEK can do any damage to the battery, and no battery charger can damage an alternator. A CTEK managers the charging and only ever trickle charges when the battery voltage drops below a certain level, which from memory is 13.8V, once the battery level is met the CTEK stops charging.

No looks nothing like that just a black box about size 100 m x 60m x 60 deep with Porsche logo on the front. As promised I did ask the sales rep from Nottingham PC & he said that they use the one in the middle consul & footwell when they needed to. Thank you for the advise gents. Richard

Hi My Porsche branded CTEK "Charge-o-mat" Battery Charger appears to have packed up. I'm not sure of the exact model (perhaps IP65) but the operating instructions are dated Jan 2004. The green Power on light comes on but when I press the Mode button to select the Car setting (14.4V/3.6A) neither the Motorcycle or Car orange bulb lights up nor do the battery charge indicators or the fault (!) indicator light. I tried connecting it to my other car but I got the same result. Are there any other checks I can make? Do these devices have a limited life - mine is over 5 years old? Do I need to trek down to my local Porsche OPC or is there a CTEK proprietary charger (conditioner?) that is the same product that would do the job for less? My current charger has worked well and appears to have kept my 997's battery in good condition during the winter months when the car is garaged but having read some horror stories on the forum and in this month's Porsche Post (Page 109 - Boxster Register) I don't want to be penny wise pound foolish. Any advice would be appreciated. Richard

I've been happy with this, bought 2 years ago, price not changed! http://www.halfords.com/motoring/bulbs-wiper-blades-batteries/car-battery-chargers/halfords-fully-automatic-battery-charger D

My CTEK did exactly the shame as yours just before we left for a summer break. I went to Amazon and bought a CTEK MXS 5.0T Battery Charger which arrived the next day. The failures are not unknown if you trawl Google and best to replace with newer and better model.

Richard, Take a look at this thread to learn about Ctek [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=810548]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=810548[/link] The 997 technical section is a valuable resource for members and provides useful, practical info. Regards Clive

The CTEK MXS 3.8 is the current equivalent of the 3600 that was re-badged as the more expensive of the two Porsche models. You can get it from Amazon for £47.90 plus the cigarette lighter adaptor for £7.99 http://www.amazon.co.uk/CTEK-Functional-7-stage-battery-charger/dp/B00E5VS58Y http://www.amazon.co.uk/CTEK-CTE-56263-Cigarette-Lighter-Connector/dp/B0016LA5O8

The CTek 3.8 is also suitable for the new models with stop/start technology as they have a different battery (AGM) and the new CTek is designed for it. Below is the extract from my comments earlier in the year in PP 'As I knew the 991 was going to be parked up for a few weeks due to a trip abroad, I acquired a new CTEK charging and conditioning unit and planned to attach the leads to the battery posts permanently, needing only to plug in the charger when required. I spoke to my Service Manager at the OPC who told me that the new AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are very different to those in previous 911 models. They have a battery monitoring system attached to the negative post and Porsche insist that conditioning and recharging is done through the always on sockets either in the glove box or the centre console oddments tray rather than with crocodile clips or eyelets to the battery posts.'

I bought the MXS 5.0 last January shortly after I got my 991. It differs a little from the latest version in that the later version has the Program Label AGM where mine shows a Snowflake, however comparing the operating instructions for mine and the current MXS 5.0 the charging programs are the same. In my hand book it states that the Normal program is "14.4V/5A Use for WET batteries, Ca/Ca, MF, GEL batteries and many AGM batteries" and the Snowflake or Cold Weather program states "14.7V/5A Use for charging at low temperatures and for Power AGM batteries like Optima and Odyssey" In the manual for the newer version it states the same for the Normal Program as mine but the AGM Program just states "Use for charging most AGM batteries like Optima and Odyssey" I have always used my MXS 5.0 on the Normal program and everything seems ok. Having now read this thread and Clive's article, the next time I use it I may use the Snowflake Program as the charging program is identical to the newer version's AGM program
