Trickle charger connections, 987.2 2009 Boxster.

I wish to fix to my battery a trickle charger, a NOCO Genius 5 device.
It comes with a lead to connect to the battery terminating in a chager compatible socket, all very neat.

However, no instructions as to fitting the lead.

The car has a simple lead acid battery, non AGM etc so simple, but to be sure:

Connect the + ve battery terminal to the red lead, and fasten the black wire to the chassis earthing stud adjacent to the battery?

Sure I've read recently that the earth stud should be used and not the - ve post on the battery.

Any comments welcome.

Graham,

There’s no battery condition monitoring on the 987.2, so you can connect directly to the battery terminals if you want … which is what I’ve been doing successfully for the past 15+ years! I think that the negative strap bolts directly to the chassis if you check?

Unlike the 981 and 718, there’s no negative post as far as I know.

Jeff

Trickle/Conditioning charging with no battery smarts then across the battery no issues - there is some logic to "if you need to jump start this "dumb" setup" then battery +ve and chassis - but I think generally - for jump starting - then putting the lights on the recipient vehicle when removing the jump leads helps reduce the small risk of voltage spikes which is what that action was supposed to reduce.

what i did with mine i got a blank obd plug and plug into the live feed and ground this was on a 981 model ,pin 4 ground pin 16 battery power ,heres a pin out of obd plug

Thanks for the details.
I have 'hard wired' the short NOCO lead (£11.40) to the +/- terminals so the connector now just reaches into the frunk.
Awkwardly though the extension lead I need to reach the car is a bit too large in diameter to comfortably pass/squeeze between the bonnet and the wing. I need to find a route with a wider gap, maybe via the wiper area?

The first charge has been done in about 2 hours, about 2 x faster than my 90's charger.
The battery was charged after 6 days of the car standing, just before it starts to shut-down circuits.

Starting the car now is far quicker as a result of this.

Also have done the same to my 1973 911 with a big 3.2 engine, both 12V batteries charged up very quickly.

All added convenience, but all good too, far better than crocodile clips....

Graham,

I’ve always fed my CTEK cable through the gap between the top of the bonnet and the wiper panel without pinching it. Hopefully it’ll be fine for your NOCO unit if that route suits.

Jeff

Dead right Jeff, that route is ideal, just simply missed the slot, rushing the job too much!
Discovered it after washing the car this afternoon.
I must try harder!!
The extension lead is quite thick, but it all threads through by the wiper with the bonnet open and passes easy past the rubber seal by the battery lid.

With the bonnet closed all is well with a light pinch on the lead, but no indentation in the insulation.
