Tuning a 944 Lux - ECU done what next?

if you want a challenge go climb a mountain for charity [:D][:D][:D][:D]

if you want power..... drop an S2 in ..instant cheap reliable power increase.[;)]

Seriously ...I do know what you mean about a challenge but looking back to the 30 years of 'restoring' old classic cars I realise now that it was all because I either couldn't afford anything better or because I had no true value of life.

Fifteen years ago I sold my 2x Mgb's and 2x Datsun 240Z's and bought a Porsche 944 with the £7000 proceeds . What a revelation that was! I realised that years spent trudging round scrap yards and building engines and gearboxes and welding rusty chassis parts was a mugs game .

When you're young you think you have forever. When you pass 60 hardly a minute goes by that you don't realise how precious every minute is and you start making life easier for yourself and enjoying life's pleasures more [:D]

For me engineering and enjoying the results of engineering achievements is indeed a pleasure! And cars offer one of the best an most accessible means of achieving this. I have been working hard on designing my own engine management system from scratch and the feeling when the car first started and steadily progressed to how it is now has been brilliant. Although when things don't go to plan it can be a bit frustrating (understatement).

Now every time I get in it, turn the key and hear it start and drive around its a great feeling to know exactly what its doing and to know you have total control over how it is working. I guess now that I have that control I just want to exercise it and take the engine a bit further, really open up the top end and it will be just such a great car. I am not looking for absolute power, I have a 951 for that, but the simple early Lux with a little bit more excitement at the top end would just make it an absolutely fabulous car IMO.

Life is worth what people are willing to do with it. If people are happy completing projects instead of watching flowers growing, good for them!

I wholeheartedly agree with that comment, I find engineering very relaxing most of the time with the odd bit of frustration thrown in here and there. My main hobby these days and I've had many, is live steam model engineering. Building something from scratch, made up of literally thousands of moving parts and seeing it come to life betters even driving my 951. Mind you SWIMBO gets fed up with me disappearing for hours on end...:)

I have been stuck in the house for the past 3x years unable to leave the house because I am a full time carer for my 90 year old Disabled Father who has dementia so i find I do have quite a bit of time on my hands these days so I've little option but go online to keep in touch with the world outside.

Anyway I hardly think you're one to talk ! your post count is 1924 ! and I only come on here primarily to help other owners with their electrical and mechanical problems not to chitty chat .

Ok, I understand now why you use such a patronizing tone. Good luck!

PS : sorry Tom for deviating your thread.

Interesting stuff. My Job involves looking at this sort of data every day, but it's nice to see this data relating to a car very much like my own. Thanks for sharing [:)]

I know what you mean about the satisfaction of an 'engineering challenge'. I've been planning to build a turbocharged Ford 1.3 Endura engine. I can get hold of a nearly new turbo that's ideally suited to the purpose and I should be able to have a go at building a custom ECU for it. In reality it would be much quicker and easier to buy a Zetec, but where's the fun in that? I'd much rather try to get over 100bhp out of the old kent-derived shopping trolley motor because, quite simply, I want to see if I can!

No problem, its quite interesting data. Very useful when getting into the real fine detail of setting up and engine. Especially when getting the cold start and all the compensations spot on.
