Turbo boost sound

What sort of noise should I be hearing when accelerating and the turbo is on full boost which is around 1 bar on my car. Sorry for the ambiguous question but I would like to hear your answers before I say what mine sounds like.

With a standard K26 turbocharger and the standard airbox and snorkel you shouldn't really hear much of anything except the exhaust, maybe a very light whirring sound from behind the glovebox area.

If you have a cone filter which replaced the airbox you will hear more of a turbine whoosh as you accelerate and possibly a slight hiss when you lift off and the diverter valve opens (dump valve).

If you have a ball bearing turbocharger and cone filter it will sound like you have an F15 doing Mach6 in your glovebox as you accelerate. Then when you lift off the throttle there will be an almighty WHOOSH from the dump valve that would give a 17 year old spotty yoof a boner to remember [;)]

LOL [:D]

Hi Jim, I hope all is well with you? When mine is on full boost the gauge is reading about 1.8 bar. Are you having issues with yours or are you just curious what the noise should be like?

Cheers
Andy

Andy, no issues as far as I'm aware. By 1.0bar I mean allowing for atmospheric so my boost pressure is around 2 bar on the gauge. When my foot is down and the boost builds there is a whooshing noise, (not like an F16 more sort of Typhoon!!!) I have a standard airbox with a K&N and a 3" bore H&S exhaust. It is fitted with the Promax level 2 kit. No leaks as far as I can see. The car accelerates as you would expect so no performance issues.

Sometimes the mind plays tricks (its an age thing) and I can't remember if the whooshing was always there as I think I've mostly driven it with the window open this year.

Ah with you Jim!

Sounds about normal then. Mine being totally standard I tend to hear just engine/exhaust note. Most noticeable noise is a bit of a whistle from the turbo at low revs, especially when the engine is cold

As stock no real turbo noise just modest exhulst note.
Cone filter and baily dv30 there's dump valve noise even thou its recirculating.

F15 noise? Think that's just made my mind up on my turbo choice

I have a 3" outlet on the turbo and decat along with the associated promax level 2 parts. I also have a k&n panel filter and a cold air feed from the front bumper and directly onto the airbox snorkel pipe.

I get nice woosh/whistle from the turbo and on full chat the I get some nice induction roar also.
