Turbo Overboosting

Dan

Hang on a mo - just to be clear - are you saying that the ONLY symptom of what you are describing as an "overboost problem" is that the standard boost guage reaches max reading?? If so - and certainly subject to what the more experienced owners think - you probably don't have a problem at all as (on my car anyway) the standard guage only gives a broad indication of boost pressure. To be specific, mine also hits the stop under max boost but according to the recent dyno day max boost is (only) 1.1 bar.

And if you've got a 'Superchip' as I have, I believe the overboost protection / cut-off is retained but set to a higher level appropriate to the remapping. Enjoy! (usual disclaimer of all liability applies....)

OOps, Chris you've fallen into the boost versus atmospheric trap [;)]

The in car gauge reads up to 2 bar.

Normal atmospheric pressure is 1 bar, so if your needle goes up to the 2, that is actually 1 bar of boost + 1 bar of atmospheric.

If the dyno measured you at 1.1 bar of boost then that would be 2.1 on your in-car dash

hey, I got someones name right[:)]

Ah!! Okay........never did well in physics(!).......I thought it would show 'guage-pressure' - pressure with reference to atmospheric.

So...when the Porsche dash guage shows 1 bar (or less) with the turbo spinning no actual boost pressure is being applied?

Anyway, in that case I think my general point to Dan is even more solid as even on a standard car max boost should be reading right at the top of the scale on the guage. There's only a tiny graduation between 1.8 bar and 2.0 bar. Certainly not sufficient to make accurate judgements of overboost??

So basically what you are all saying is stop being a 'Nervous Ninny' and just go out and enjoy the cars ridiculous performance [:D]

Cheers for the info chaps, I am taking the car away for the weekend so will see how it goes on a long run.[;)]

Paul, nice of you to volunteer Fen to rebuild my engine if it all goes wrong [:D]
