Whats the going price for a set of Turbo S / silver rose, lightweight alloy "design 90,s" ??????

Im looking to fit some to my S2 for track us ,,,saving weight + all.[8|][8|][8|]

also what sizes do they come in..?? 7",,8" ,, + 9".../ 16,s.????

Silver Rose and design 90 wheels are different things.

Assuming you mean Silver Rose forged wheels (because you already have D90's I assume) then the answer is lots. Up to at least £400. To be honest they aren't worth it on a track car IMO if only because it's far more difficult to find 16" track tyres than 17" ones.

I believe they only come in the one size combination but as I got it totally wrong last time I'm now confused as to what that was. 7.5" and 9" maybe? There was a 928 model that had them too, but those may very well have been the same size.

and i believe the 928 used the 9"s front & rear.

Bigdave - looks like you and i have seen the same set..... [:D]

The "Club Sport"/"CS Design" rims were first seen on the short-lived 928 Club Sport (17 cars built) that eventually turned into the 1989 928 GT and the 928 SE for the UK market. The fronts were 8" wide and the rear were 9" wide. The most perfectly ultimate website on the 928 CS/SE can be found here : 928 CS & SE (Yours sincerely did the french -> english translation, feel free to shout for unforgiveable mistakes [8D])

The design was adapted to the 1988 944 Turbo S with 7" fronts and 9" rears.

Some knob writing press articles once wrote they were made of magnesium, although they're only something like 25% made of magnesium. Since then thousand of naïve people have believed those wheels to be 100% made of magnesium, which is wrong.

Pedantly Yours,

Thanks for the info....

Actually i have a set of 17" cup 2,s fitted at present. + mighty fine i think it looks too....
I will post a pic when i get round to it....

I do agree with you about Track tyres are harder to find in 16" ...

Just a thought.........[8|][8|][8|]

I believe the normal D90 is a pretty light wheel

I'd like to see some definitive weights of these wheels without tyres because I have a set of each, D90s and Forged CS, and I'm not sure there is that much difference.

My D90's have Pirelli Slicks and my CS have Kuhmo street tyres yet when I weighed them they are identical. I am guessing that the track tyre must weigh a lot more, but I don't know for sure [&:]

Dave Sims website has some wheels weights (but not the D90s) www.944turbo.org.uk

As mentioned the 245 16"'s are difficult to come by as well as the Turbo S/SE Forged wheels are now getting on for 17 years old along with the fact that they have wafer thin spokes and IIRC someone was on this forum around 5 months ago with images showing broken "spokes" after a track day

IMHO not advisable stick with your std wheels or more modern 17"s

Here is the aforementioned wheel!

The really scary thing with both those wheels is that you can see where the other spokes were starting to fail too, especially on the full wheel picture. I'm guessing they are too thin and flat and the age puts them over the edge.

They've got funny offsets too, compared to the D90's, so you'd need to space them out farther. I think the front's are ET 65 and the rears are ET60, so need something like a 13mm on the front and 30mm on the rear.

They don't feel any lighter to lift than the D90's when I pick them up, but are very strong due to the drop forging process... but, it makes them brittle in comparison the standard alloys. When they go, they go in a big way! Trouble with second hand wheels is you need to be sure how they've been treated in their past life to be sure of flinging them round a track.

Personally, I think they look the nuts on a pointy-nose 944 (like my S), but the 7.5 front and 9 rear D90's look beautiful on the later 944's. Or you could go to Cups...

The pic of the 2nd wheel is mine. A very strange failure - no impact, running on road tyres, in largely damp conditions (certainly not bone dry) - so the loads shouldn't have been that great. I became aware of the problem when I started to feel some vibration through the drivetrain - it felt like a loose wheel (don't ask me how I know about that!) so I came off the track to a series of alarmed stares from spectators...

The wheels have been refurbed at some point and judging by the faintness of the markings I'm guessing quite a bit of material was lost in the bead/shot blasting. I would certainly advise against using these wheels on the track unless you're sure of their history and will be replacing mine probably with D90s.

Tim's point about spacers doesn't fit with my experience. My car doesn't have any spacers. Are you sure they should have been fitted?
