Turbo v S2

I believe it was a 110,000 mile standard K26/8 turbo unmodified, and yes my email/house address is Sidestream,

I think all this talk of turbo failure due to a foreign object should be taken in context.
It only happened because someone was careless or didnt put something back together properly.
Turbos dont suck nuts bolts or washers out of thin air, if you are carefull you should never leave anything in the intake of ANY car.
So its hardly a case of the turbo being unreliable if it fails in this kind of way.
I am sure a turbo left to get on with its job would excede 100k being water cooled helps stop it cooking after shut down, and being further from the exhaust ports may also stop it getting as hot as conventional positons..

The whole reason I mentioned it was because foreign objects aren't really the car's fault, yet they account for a fair percentage of turbo failures I know about, hence the turbo isn't reliable. We did a poll somewhere and decided 150k looked like a reasonable mileage to expect from the original turbo.
 
Prices for all models seem depressed at the moment. I've been keeping an eye on 993 prices over the past 18months and they are definately at a low and it seems they can't give 996's away. In fact I think the whole 2nd hand car market seems a bit depressed at the moment.
 
Tell me about it, I have just been looking on autotrader to see what I can get for mine and there are loads of 90/91 turbo's for between 6-7K, apparently mint with Full history and there was me hoping for a quick sale at £9K [:(]
 
Also there is speculation as to the cone filters being able to keep out small yet dangerous particles as opposed to the older fashioned stock airbox.

and therein lies the story. A lot of these cars described as mint may well look nice compared to any other 16 year old car, but a mint Porsche is a totally different kettle of fish, as people soon find out when they drive round the country looking at minters which are in fact munters.

Don't undersell your own mint car just because of low prices on Autotrader. A genuine buyer will pay the proper price for a proper car, you may just have to wait a while until you find him [:(]

Mmm, i'm not so sure about this. If you think about it any peice of debris that is big enought to do damage to the turbo would need to get into the engine bay, then into the very corner of the bay where the cone filter is (assuming the filter is behind the passenger side light). There is no way on earth anything bigger or heavier than a grain of sand could get into that area let alone with enough force or momentum to make its way through the filter and upto the turbo. With the underfloor tray there is no way that anything can ricochet up from the road, I can't see anything winding its way past the panel gaps in the bodywork, I doubt very much that there is enough suction through the filter so suck debris up Dyson-style and there is no direct air intake or duct that is channeling air and debris directly onto the face of the filter. I think Ross225 above hit the nail on the head - only loose bolts from some sort of installation down stream, or scale from the sump breathing system as in 944Turbo's case is likely to cause this type of damage. If someone shows me a cone filter with a hole in it then fair enough but until then I remain very sceptical.
 
Dust and sand grains will soon knacker a turbo, bearings shafts etc get an absolute hammering form anyairborne particles!
Its true, many cone style filters increase overall flow at the expense of filtration quality!
weird thing is for many turbo cars replacing the filter is worthless, powerwise. The restriction in the "system" is the turbo itself, not the induction side.
My golf 18T makes well over 320hp on the stock airbox and paper filter! But needs a big turbo to do so, swapping the filter to a cone style wiht cold air pipe made less than 2hp peak and knacked torque off boost!
Have a look at some of the induction pipes after the filter on your average max power car! You will see how much crap gets up there!
 
Yes, one does, other is K03/4 hybrid!

Very nice as a road car, not as loopy as you'd think, stock internals etc. POwer is progressive but just keeps going and going, its weird at the same revs, it makes harly any more than the k04! But it carries on making power for another 2k revs!!
