Two enigmas,two answers

Here are two new threads for 993 owners. And two enigmas.

(1) Why did the factory create one of the most curvaceous sports cars ever, and then park a pair of ruddy great wipers right in front of you such that you cannot appreciate it on the move? None of the OPC's I spoke to could explain, apart from "well, sir, it is to optimise the wiper pattern"
So I had my garage Autostrasse switch the wiper motor output shaft 180 degrees. This took them five minutes, but a little longer to experiment for the best new wiper pattern. Now the arms park on the left, slightly up from the scuttle and to a certain extent obscuring the forward view of the passenger (but not by much).
I was amazed at the driving difference. It was a whole new experience to clearly see that swelling curve of the right front quarter (steady, steady), and to be able to place the car with far greater precision through track corners.
Try it and see.

(2) Why did the factory spend endless windtunnel hours perfecting the shape of the 993 for an efficient cd, and then allow the issuing OPC to cut two holes in the centre of the front PU to fit clonking great front numberplate backplates. This masks part of the centre air intake and surely impedes proper airflow, apart from detracting from the purity of that front end. So I took mine off, repaired the damage and applied heavy duty numberplate decals instead. Now the lines of the front end are as they should be, and my local Constabulary are quite happy about it - they say that car numbers merely have to be regulation size and be readily visible at all times. They do not have to be plates.

Now I like your thinking.... could you please post some photos of the changes or send some them to me Will@De-Ath.net.

INTERESTING 2 POINTS !

the wiper switch is a mod on p-car.... thought about it but unsure about it's resting position on the otherwise side.. but agree the view does improve when the wipers swing across !

although the later reminds me of all those early mx-5's I've seen with such plates.... although now I've armourfended the front I wonder if it will work ?

although when I run track days I put special plates.... ! so that would stop me from switching ! [:-]

pics would help !!

regards

Two things I have thought about.

The first, as Sundeep says is a mod written up on P-car ut me off as it sounded as if it could get a little difficult and fiddly.

The second, where do you you get the decals? I thought that PC plod wanted them flat so that their laser came back to them[:D]

Re the wipers.

I wonder if the idea with the standard positioning is so that the screen in front of the driver is given a wipe slightly quicker than if the starting point was the passenger's side.

Standard wiper position seems a non-issue to me. Aren't they made to park in front of the driver to maximise the swept area immediately in his/her vision? Can't see too well? Raise the seat.

Peter,

You may be right as the american cars wipers park on the left.

If you were to move them can you get the sweep to go to the bottom of the windscreen on the drivers side? If not, you are going to be left with a large portion of the windscreen that will not be touched.

hhhmmmm ..

you mean it is possible to make the front wipers even more useless than they are already !

[]

... you mean it is possible to make the front wipers even more useless than they are already !

I was driving up the M1 last week in the lashing rain with the wipers on tripple speed thinking "these wipers are really good". Maybe I need to get out more and drive other makes of car for comparison.

This mod is a simple mechanical one and takes about half an hour , the wipers don't work less efficiently, you can experiment with park positions etc.

re the wipers:I `m not familiar with the arrangement on a 993, but I can tell you from bitter experience with my 944 that you can "experiment" with the positions until they take you away in a f`ing straitjacket.Probably one of the most frustrating jobs I`ve ever had to do (I was changing the crossbar as the bushes had gone).I wouldn`t do it for fun.
cheers

I've got rid of the no. plate and replaced with adhesive instead. You can order on line from : http://www.numberplates.btinternet.co.uk/
As long as the font and size is the same, PC plod won't bother you. The curve is thus restored.

so then you know what you are helping me with [:D] at the next meet !

Pleasure but read this article first before you commit, earlier cars are less fiddley.

There, that got you going, didn't it.

My view in pouring rain is no worse, and the front decal numberplate is near as dammit vertical - I wouldn't have thought to change if the front end was angled.

I don't think they would pick one up on it but this is from DVLA web site :

"Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements. "

I hope PC Plod has better things to do than picking on sticky no. plates... but then again...
Well, I've not been stopped because of it, and I'd been stopped for some other reasons...let's not go into than... and they didn't say anything.
Will, sorry I haven't got a photo of it but if we meet up on the next curry night you can see it then.

Re the wipers problems....

You can always try some Rain-X application... i have put it on all windows, and the water just beads and flies off.... as long as you apply it regularly, it works well....[:D]
