Tyre choice - again

Funnilly enough i've just been reading an issue of 911 & PW from April '04 that was talking about the N rating homoligation process Dunlop were going through for their Sport Maxx SP tyre. The resulting tyre is a two ply tyre as opposed to a single ply on the non-N rated tyre, has stiffer sidewalls, a Kevlar Aramid composite bead instead of metal (which is unique to the N rated tyre) and have less tread depth than the std tyre on the basis that Porshce drivers demand top performance out of the box and cannot wait for the tread depth to wear down and the tread blocks to stiffen up - "Tyre life isn't an issue for Porsche drivers" apparently. The tyre is also only homologated for the 911 and Boxter (and Caymen I assume).

I'm with you, also, from a previous thread, had N ratings been invented when the 944S2 was around?

Apparently N rating started in 1988, although I'm not sure whether they applied it to all of the models at the time.

I'm looking for a new set of boots for my S at the moment. It came with Pirelli P6000s, which are the worst tyres I've ever had on a car. It'a like driving in the wet when the road is dry, and like driving on ice when it's wet. I haven't driven on ice yet, but I wouldn't fancy my chances of getting past the end of my drive [:'(]

I find my rear dunlops (SP9000) a bit loose as well but very controlable, flatering my driving (they seem to get to a certain slip angle and slide no further) SO2's I found held longer but let go much more suddenly.

There were 2 types of S02. The original S02 wasn't particularly good in the wet. Then they brought out the S02 Pole Position, which used a different compound and was a lot better in the wet. They were both about the same in the dry. Well worth knowing if you're looking at geting S02s.

The thing about the age of tyres is that it is very dependant on how they have been stored. A tyre stored at a constant temperature and humidity will last pretty much indefinitely. If you let it heat cycle by storing it in a poorly insulated warehouse, then it won't last long at all. I'd guess that these discontinued tyres would have been stored properly in a factory or major distributors warehouse.

I had SO2 N2 and SO2 N3 they were very grippy (and relatively short lived) but when they broke away on me I couldn't catch it wet or dry (on track) With the dunlops I can play with the (only slightly lower) limits a lot more freely and haven't spun even on a very wet silverstone in the first rain since the F1.

It must be noted that Tony rarely gets over 30mph on track and always screams if he has to change up to second gear :ROFLMAO:

and I never exit the garage if its raining ;)

Just an update...

Decided to go for S01 rears. I understand that the ride will be a bit firmer and they wear quite well. Also, that they should hold on for longer but not break away so progessively (unlike the Pzeros which were lovely and catchable).

Kept the Rossos on the front as they have too much tread to dump at the moment. Not ideal but I passed the MOT, and thats the main thing for now. Noted on the MOT report that front brakes out of balance and the hand brake down on effectiveness (believe it or not they gave me the benefit of the doubt!!!). My handbrake has never been much cop, but out of balance front brakes....is this comman?

Mine failed on out of balance front brakes last year. Sure enough teh calliper plates had lifted causing reduced effectiveness. It still stopped in a straight line like a very stoppy stopping thing, but the imbalance was just over the limits allowed [&:]
