David,
According to the Toyo employee I spoke to at UK HQ the tyres now stamped 93Y are physically the same as those previously stamped 97Y - this is information direct from the factory.

As Toyo no longer provide a 265/35 stamped 97Y it is Hobson's choice - the 97Y left in the supply chain are old stock.

I agree with your comment, it does seem strange.....

Cheers,
Kevin
Hi Kevin, apologies for doubting what you posted.
I've been in contact with Toyo Technical department and it's evidently down to the Americans.
Their tests showed that what Toyo were marking as 97 rated tyres were infact only 93 rated. So the US has more stringent requirements?
So if the same thing is happening to all the other European manufacturers then the US has a new testing regime. However if it is just Toyo then they were at fault.
93 rating = 650Kg
97 rating = 730Kg

David,
No issue :)

The tyre failed to meet the US "plunger test" where a plunger is forced into the tyre - this is a US only test and does not figure in the Eu I believe. Since Toyo didn't want to have to handle two tyres in this size they just downrated the 97Y until it met the US test.

Net result is I am using the same tyre that I have been for 7 years - it just now has a different label....

Cheers,
Kevin
