Tyre Wear

took mine back to the OPC in Swindon re lurching gearbox when cold and also "clunking" when engaging reverse, they basically fobbed me off. Could you tell me the outcome of your experiance with this problem so I can have another crack at them.

Has anyone else had experience of uneven tyre wear? After 15,000 miles on my Cayenne S the fronts were both worn virtually down to the canvas on the insides, but had plenty of life left on the outside (which is why I had missed the problem earlier). Rather than pay through the nose, took it down to Micheldever Tyres in Andover for a new set of replacement Bridgestone Turanzas. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the settings from Porsche to check the tracking which they thought was the problem.

So booked in to Porsche Guildford and got a £250 bill for tracking check which found nothing wrong....

Go figure.

Anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

Had a very similar problem and checked the tracking first outside of the Porsche network. tracking was ok so whent to Porsche who dealt with the issue whilst no cost to rectify the problem I had to make a contribution for the milage covered on the tyres which seemed pretty fair
 
The Cayenne does run more negative than your average agricultural 4x4 so some degree of higher wear on the inside would seem logical, and 15000 miles out of tyres on a 2ton sports car doesn't seem too bad. However sounds like maybe this doesn't explain your experience. Tyre wear on Cayennes is something we're all going to have learn about. I don't know what you use a a reference point - not worth comparing it with most other so called SUV's, not fair to compare to other Porsches (I'm assuming the weight and tyre construction invalidate this).
Maybe we should have some sort of poll on this? Personal experience (6.5K miles, 18" Continentals, std tyre pressures, usually 2 adults 2 labradors on board) noticable tyre wear marginally greater on the inside at front- but not excessively so will measure and report back.

Yes, there were some scarey stories early on in this forum about tyres going after 6k miles. I have 20" tyres on my S and they lasted 12k miles which I think is quite reasonable - I just got the front ones replaced by OPC for £780 and have been told to replace the rear ones even though they have a few months wear on them in order to have the four wheels with balanced tread. Anyone know if this is true or can I get a few more thousand from the rear tyres? By the way, takes three months to order them (at least at my OPC in the South East), so place an order early.
 
IMNVHO, what really seem to muller the tyres on any vehicle with power steering is excessive use whilst manouvering -try not to spin the wheel unless the vehicle is moving.

BTW, when you think that the front tyres are coping with braking, steering AND power inputs, 15,000 sounds extraordinarily respectable for a vehicle like this!!

Has anybody tried the recomended Scorpion A/T tyres?

11,000 out of my Pzeros 18" and still not illegal / bald etc, fronts have 3mm tread on them, rears 2mm. Have taken them off (and binned the rears/kept the fronts as emergency spares) and have put on pirelli S/t M&S for the winter. Am pretty happy with tyre wear considering it is driven relatively hard and it is 2.2 ton of vehicle.
 
It think I've read on here that Pirelli P-Zeros start with less tread than most other brands.

Chris ........ I'd say not.

My 3.2 running the same tyres -- 90% motorway driving returns - 25 to 30K with slightly more wear in the centre.
 
I thought it wouldn't be normal for the to wear so quickly, I mainly do town driving with little motorway, my main journey is only 2.5-3 mile each way lots of stop start but I can't see how that would affect the tyres that much.
 
I have a KNS with 20" rubber. The outer fronts have become slicks after 4000 miles. These are Michelin Diamaris.

OPC quoted £300 per tyre. I have rung around and got that down to £240. What I was told by one of the tyre places is that everyone should have their tracking checked every three months! I certainly wasnt aware of this.
 
Different sized tyres will perform differently, but 996 owners have been know to go through Rossos in under 5k miles ! Same car, same driver got 14k miles out of Michelins. How much the tyres have in common is very debatable, but Rossos do seem very erratic in their wear rate.

er... what do you think causes the car to slow down and accelerate? The main friction point between car and outside world is the tread on your tyres! (Paul's will last much longer because he's at a much more constant speed on a motorway).

(I completely accept that only 4000 odd miles is very low, but I don't think you can compare with motorway miles)
 
Well Ive just swapped from Diamaris to Pirelli cos the wear was so bad I didnt think it could be worse! I only get 8-9K out of a set, tyre fitter says he's seen worse in a Cayenne. Wear is pretty even, front and rear.

That's good - they must have the power distribution about right.
It always seems to me that there must be inefficiencies in the process if (on a 4 wheel drive vehicle) the tyres wear at different rates. But on my 993C4 the rears wear at least twice as fast as the fronts, and on my Toyota RAV4 the fronts wear nearly twice as fast as the rears...so neither have it right!
 
I run diamaris on 20" technos(Cayenne "S" 06MY) and the shoulders at the front always wear out V quick,they must take a beating with all that weight and grip,something has to give..!?
 
When I bought my KN 3.2 it cam with a new set of P Zeros on 19's, in reality they lasted no more than 9k and although the geo was spot on had uneven wear, pressures where as handbook. (steel sprung)

Changed to 20's with Continentals have to say lasted much longer with even wear, still going strong at 15k. IMO P Zero are pants...had them on previous Impreza's & at the time promised my self never to use them again.....there are much better around and found that to be so. 2.5 ton on p zero.... they can't cope.!
 
Buy a V 6 PETROL .They are going to do something soon

On my V 8 the original tyres Pirelli wore out very quickly but the Bridgestones
replacements have been fantastic .
 
I've had Yokohamas on previous style Cayenne and the new one both on 21" rims, these are excellent road holding rubber but not expecting to get any better than high teens. I had Bridgestones on my 05 Cayenne 19" wheels and had no confidence in them in slippery conditions. We have Michelin Latitude all season on our Macan in 20" size these are excellent.
Tyres I would never fit are Continentals had them on my Range Rovers and really had issues with aquaplaning and wear wise they look ok, they look ok and bang there shot to the tread wear indicator . I was about to buy a discounted stock new cayenne 3.0 D earlier this year but walked when I saw it was fitted with Contis and had 8 way seats with no lumber adjustment.
