Tyres 40%track and 60% road...

I'd have thought the the more dramatic change in behaviour exhibited by a dedicated track tyre than by a road tyre would cause a problem here as well.

Track rear, road front = marked understeer when dry, but significant oversteer when wet.

It would make damp road conditions a fairly hazardous experience, I'd have thought.

On a t-day a few moons ago, i had to fit the Goodyears[GSD3,s] to the rear + Michelin pilot CUPS on the front after suffering a rear puncture in a michelin....

It certainly made for interesting handling....LOTS of oversteer....In fact it became a dry drift day.....[;)][;)][:D]
But i wouldnt recomend doing this long term...The car is VERY unsettled....

I ordered the Kuhmo's for the back of my S2 from an online place about 6 months ago and they sent me the Falken FK452's (which were supposedly more expensive.) They seem to be an excellent tyre, with more progressive break-away than the Conti Sport Contacts I had before. (However, since I changed the suspension I simply can't make them break away at all in the dry.)

They generally get regarded as a good budget all-rounder, which offers very good value for money.

Falkens seconded, v good value and on track are v v good but heat up if relatively new (deep tread block pattern) and lose grip after a while but you can feel it coming and become a demon drifter [8D]. Only driven them hard on a wet track (coped v v well, as good as other 944`s etc) so cant comment on a wet on road as I never push any car in the wet on the road (why would you??)

I currently have Goodyear F1 GSD3's fitted - pretty good all round tyre. I've not had them on the track yet (that comes in two weeks [:D]). If you go down this route make sure that you get tyres made in Germany or China and CE stamped - there are some grey import Goodyear F1's around (made in Taiwan I think?) that are not CE stamped and are not of the same construction as the ones for the European market.

In the past I've used Toyos on my Subaru. The T1-S was a great tyre but they replaced it with the T1-R which I found to be a bit too harsh for the road. The sidewall was very stiff so great turn in but you felt every pebble. They may, however, be just the ticket for you as I'm sure that they would be better than the Goodyears on the track. Bot the T1-S and the T1-R were very forgiving and progressive on the limit.

Finally, I've heard very good things about the Falken FK452 and they seem to be a great price - I'll be trying them out next!

Dulop SP9000 tyres... Has anybody used these before ?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I had a set of these on my BMW 540i estate - the traction control light seemed to be on permanently, particularly in the wet, and they lasted 8,000 miles. Mind you that was in a 2 tonne car driven with gusto [;)]

That's weird as I'm pretty sure that's what I had on my 530d and they lasted ages. yes I could get the traction light on in the wet, but RWD and 360ft lb coming in pretty low down is always going to do that.

Yes my favourite 944 road tyre so far, tried (all 17") mxx3, bridgestone S02 N-2 and N-3, contisport somethings, and eagles.
They do let the back slide around a little with approx 350bhp but very controllable,

PS on my second set of sp9000's about to go for a third - they last longer than S02s but not sure exactly how many miles.

PPS on a wet silverstone track day the instructor was impressed enough (by the grip not my driving ;) ) to ask what the tyres were

Has anyone noticed any odd handling after switching to Toyo T1R ?
I had a set of rears fitted recently (still have Toyo F1S at the front) and the car now changes lane on its own. I have the feeling I am driving an old 3.2 as it won't keep in line without constant steering attention. In curves it will suddenly switch from understeer to oversteer.
Not sure what to think about it as there has been positive feedback on these tyres on this forum.

I began with the recommended pressure of 2.5 bar which is what I was running the previous rear F1S with.
I then increased the pressure to 2.8 bar and noticed a little improvement, but still not satisfied with them at all.

I have just done a track day last week in my 944 which is only driven to and from
the track. I was only thinking how stable the TR1's were on the Motorway to the point where I could take my hands off the wheel and they would track perfectly straight.
What I did notice is that on the track understeer became more pronounced as the tyres got hotter (therefore higher pressure) But readjusting pressure sorted that.
I however run the tyres at the handbook recommendation of 2 front 2.5 rear for a 944.(notwithstanding the track)
My car is perfectly set up suspension wise/ tracking with all parts having been recently installed.
Could worn whatever[&:] be the problem !!

I assume you aren't running 245/45 at the rear as I do ?

I noticed the 245/45 T1R sidewalls are much softer than F1S, T1S and S-O2 sidewalls, which are all three N-rated tyres whereas the T1R is not - I'm beginning to think the N-rating is not commercial hype after all.

I also run T1-Rs on my turbo and am quite happy with them. Sizes are the standard 225 front 245 rear, 16 inch. I actually found them an improvement over my previous T1-Ss, which used to be far more prone to following ruts in the road.

In contrast to others, I ran higher tyre pressures at my last trackday - approx 42psi hot. The car was significantly better, in particular on turn-in. On the road I run them at 34psi.

205/55 on front and 225/50 on rear. These are the recommended sizes from Porsche for the 16" Fuchs which were the only 16" option on an 85 Lux
Although mine is now seriously modified and running Turbo legs from the same era which had the 16" teledials which I am using.(and were the recommended tyre sizes for those wheels as well)

Thanks for that - do sidewalls on yours feel particularly soft ?

I think they are fairly soft, but probably no more so than the T1-Ss. Certainly the improvement when running at higher pressure on track was dramatic, which does suggest the sidewalls flex a lot. But I have not felt the need to increase pressures on the road.
One thing I do remember from when I first fitted the Rs - they took a long time to "bed in". They did feel very squirmy and loose for the first few hundred miles.
