Tyres again Availability

Half a can of Tyreweld stopped the slow leaks on the old tyres, on my Audi. And Top Gun is about flying not driving, though perhaps you will be jumping some ditches soon...

I think there's more chance of ditch jumping happening had I chosen to drive around with tyre weld in them........and I believe Top Gun also rode a mid life crisis sport bike?

Im happy with my choice of tyre, but as has been said - not everyone’s wants/needs/budgets are the same.

I had a GPZ900 when I was 22, but I've always been ahead of my time :p.

Who was the guy who went absolutely postal if anyone modified their car in any way whatsoever - probably going back 10 years now?
Might have been 944man, he still posts on Pistonheads occasionally. Credit where it's due, he does have a lot of experience and knowledge of 944/68's. He used to be a bit abrupt with his opinions sometimes, and that doesn't fly in mumsnet times. Or could have been a previous moderator, that had an S2.

No it wasn’t “944man” I speak to him every couple of weeks on the phone and he is still as abrupt as ever on FB too :ROFLMAO:

So it's tyre time for me again. As always, I aim to get good value for money vs performance. So I won't be going for £400 a corner option.....

Rears - 245 45 16. Had Toyo TR-1's on for about 6 years. They have worn evenly and have now reached minimum legal tread depth. I would buy again, and they are currently about £130 a pop with Camskill. Good grip but a bit sketchy in the wet. So, had a deep dive into the world of availability and reviews last night. I have opted for a pair of Nankang Sportnex AS-2+. A rated for wet, really good reviews for wet braking, handling and aquaplaning. These things are important in Scotland for a daily driver. Reasonable dry performance and seemingly quite low road noise. Currently available best price of £95 each with Black Circles.

Fronts - 225 50 16. Have ran Westlake Sport SA-57's for about 4 years (there is a reason they ended up on my rims but i won't bore you with that just now lol!). Done a job, but with the dot number saying they were made about 8 years ago, they need replaced. Tread is still very good, grip was ok, but has fallen off a cliff a bit. Again, not going down the premium route, my research tells me that the Tomket Sport range come out top of pops for the budget offerings, again really strong wet performance (only Conti's were better for 4 times the price) and more than reasonable in the dry. These are B wet rated. Camskill doing these for £45 (yes £45!) each just now, so i have ordered a pair for the front axle. I will also be taking this opportunity to get my lovely new (to me), straight, refurbished front CS rim in to play and bench the one with the dent on the rim that causes a little wobble around the 70 mph mark. I've lived with this for 14 years, so this will be a monumental moment!! I will also have them "Road Force" balanced when fitted. I've discussed this before but well worth it as it is a very accurate balance that simulates the tyre being on the road on the machine. This almost eradicated the little wobble I discussed last time I had it done, way better than any other balance option in my opinion.

So you pays your money you takes your chances. Including delivery I'm £320 all in for all 4 corners and quite happy with what I've read in regards to performance, price and my needs. I very rarely ask my tyres for full beans performance and the car isn't tracked. I could have bought three quarters of a Pirelli tyre for that outlay.

Anyway, shoot me down in flames if I deserve it, but this should be good advice for any budget conscious 245 45 16/ 225 50 16 user with similar needs to my own!

Cheers

Stuart
Well I've joined the Nankang revolution mainly as there isn't much alternative. Spotted my rear Toyos were looking a little the worse for wear and then realised the dot code said 2018!
The only options are p zeros at 325 each, some yokohama semi track day things at 235 and the NKs. I had ordered some Toyos through ATS but then they called to say they couldn't get any. I feel it is likely any stock will be old or non existent.
Anyway NK aren't my first choice but we shall see. Cheap enough at 100 fitted I suppose. It really is nearly at the point of buying 17" wheels just for the tyre options.
One thing I have noticed I don't like is that the NK have almost no rim protection whereas the toyos had plenty.
Fronts next but they aren't so bad but are equally old.

Yeah ditto on the Nankang lack of rim protection, but so far for me the tyres are great with plenty wet and dry grip. As you say, choice is slim for the rears. Just stay away from kerbs!!

I can report positively on my Falken 310's on the front, and good rim protection! Again about £100 a corner. I'd plump for a pair of them David, Camskill the cheapest.

Not the accepted wisdom, but when my Bridgestones got harder and gripless I ordered Avon from Black circles (based on their support of motorsport.) What was delivered were Cooper CS8...they are the US company that now owns Avon, Goodyear and others. After two sessions at Prescott (one of which was Hill Climb School: 10 runs) I have to say I'm happy with the grip...no sudden breakaway on the track's 2 hairpins and 4 corners...

Cooper tyres local to us in Melksham have just closed for good. An acquaintance works for them and is now doing a different role.
I assume everyone can find somewhere that will fit tyres supplied by them, most here aren't really very keen!
