Tyres Again!

Need a new set for the turbo. Standard late turbo D90's.

I have been quoted Conti Sport Contact N1's for £420 all in.

For road use with the possibility of the odd track day.

Does anyone think I could do better.

Cheers

Robbie

Hi Robbie,
Got those fitted to my standard car on D90s and i think they are good value quality tyre, for road use they are fine.Track days i am not sure as i have not used them on a circuit yet.
Cheers,

Conti's are a fine road tyre, they grip well, last well and aren't too noisy but are quite pricey. For outright grip there seems to be a consensus for Toyo T1R or T1S but they won't last as long.

I use Kumho Ecsta Supra, a budget make which seem absoltutely fine for my driving needs and a set will be circa £250 in 16"

You don't need N rated tyres for 944's but it wont harm if you do. You'd only be saving yourself a few quid per tyre anyway. I've got Conti's on mine and they seem OK, though i've nothing to compare on this car. They certainly are lasting well - in fact seem to be pretty wear proof after 2 trackdays and about 15k road miles, which suggests to me they might not be as grippy as other tyres.

Hi Robbie,

Good to hear from you again. Where have you been hiding?

What happened to those "el cheapo" boots you had strapped to your car when we met at Brooklands a couple of years back? You haven't finally worn them out? [:D]

I did Donnington with Contisports on Beaky and, while they did start to get squirrelly after four or five laps their performance reduced evenly so you weren't suddenly caught out by a dramatic loss of grip.

On the track they squeal like piggies when taken to the edge of their grip but break away is very even.

Not the same level of grip as a track tyre but still enough to have lots of fun, and very forgiving. While I missed track tyres, and it is frustrating when you think you could be going quicker, the Contis were sufficiently good that (I think) they offset all the agro of having a second set of wheels.

OOps I seem to have bought myself a 3rd set of wheels already equipped with Kumho road legal track tyres (235 up front, 275 at rear). Picking them up on Saturday

Sorry for the Off Topic [8|]

Nice! Love the black wheels. What size are the rims? They look the same as Beaky but I'm only running 215s and 255s.

Thanks for the feedback chaps.

Generally speaking I always go to Micheldever Tyres as they have always been cheapest in the past. When I phoned them yesterday they only had the Conti's in my size at £430.

I then phoned a local tyre supplier and when I told him my quote he offered me the same tyres for £420.

I have had Falken and Kumho before and been happy with them on the road and have not really cared on track as they are so cheap.

The one thing I like about the Conti's is that they are not directional so you can swap them from side to side to even the wear.

I dont plan to do many tack days this year in my car. Maybe a trip to the Ring in November with RMA.

My pal Tim has bought a 968 powered 944 - it used to run in the Porsche Speed Championship - so we may do some track days or a couple of sprints in that.

They are the same Boxster twist design but they are 9" all round as opposed to 7" front and 8.5" rear like Beaky (and LIL) currently have. I'll see what the 9" are like up front and maybe swap them for my 8.5" and paint em black to match [8|]

Have you only got 8½" at the back then, not 9" like Beaky [;)] Size matters.

I wouldn't think 8½ or 9 would work at the front but it will be interesting to find out. I seem to recall someone fitted the wheels at the wrong end after a track day and said the car felt horrible.

IIRC Rock Connoll has 245's on 8" rims at the front of WUF.

Yes that was Pete Crosthwaite after one of the Goldtrack Silverstone evenings, only he then had 255s at the front and 225s at the rear, what was worse is they were directional and by the time he got home he had totally arsed up the tread []

Robbie,
Another Conti fan. Use them on the Std 16" rims - daily driver, good in the wet, good wear, - hard to explain but I trust them. Not cheap but not expensive either. Got my last set 3 months ago for about the £400mark.

i have been recommended to a website where they come to your home or work and fit the tyres and it works out a lot cheaper than going to the garage, for instance, only road tyres like, i paid £187 for a pair of toyo proxes 205/55/zr 16 at a garage, then was given this site which would have cost 140 dabs. bloomin garage tore my gear gaiter too, they never said anythin about it too, so i had to replace that straight off.

Now iv been quoted well over £300 for my rears at garages, same tyre but 245/45/16s whereas on this site they will not cost either 220 or 240 i cant remember exact figures but thats who ill be using when i get paid.....
etyres i think, hope this some use to someone

I had Conti's on my S2, and replaced the rear ones with Falken FK45-somethings recently.

The falkens break away more progressively, and have a lower ultimate grip, but were about half the price of replacement Conti's. Water (rain) seems to make less difference to the Falkens than to the Conti's as well - they perform very similarly in the wet to in the dry. The Conti's needed more care in the wet as their limits dropped off noticably.

Falkens are doing me nicely for now - I am still getting the "RWD, so sliding it everywhere" thing out of my system. When I grow up, I may go back to Conti's. (Being grown up will, of course, mean I have more money to afford them as well!)

Oli.

Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's used to be amongst the most expensive road tyres you could buy but recently only cost me £120per tyre for some 225/40 R18's on my previous golf.

If they have come down in price this much on all sizes then I would recommend them for definite! They are very solid in the dry (not as good as Toyo R1's) but more than make up for it with their AMAZING performance in the wet. They grip to the point that you really can drive like its dry!

Regards,

Thanks to all. Conti's fitted.

The bloke in the shop couldnt get his pooter to calculate the discount for the £420 quoted so ended up charging me £410.

One last little bit on this.

I just checked through the invoices (thay fell out of the folder, I don't spend my Fridays doing that out of choice) and noted that the Bridgestone SO2's were fitted at 66,700 miles. The new tyres were fitted at 93,500 miles.

That's nearly 27,000 miles on a set of tyres. Impressive!
