Tyres Again!

I always had another set of tyres for track days. Oh, and now I think of it I did have some 17" wheels fitted for a while. So you can ignore that bit about how many miles they lasted.[&:]

That's rubbish compared with Fens favourite P6000's

They would barely have worn out the stickers by then :ROFLMAO:
 
Just to stay somewhat in context, but you guys would have a better idea than I so I thought I'd ask. What tyres do you recommend for the wet trackdays? I need an alternative to the Toyo R888's and is it actually better to go down in width if possible in the wet? I have some 17" 235/255 with Kumho Ecstas that I use on the road but I've never used anything but the 18" 255/285 r-specs on the track and only in the dry. I have a friend that has unfortunately found out the hard way that r-spec and wet track do not mix.[:mad:][:mad:][:mad:]
 
for wet trackdays I use my usual road tyres but IIRC you race - if so I would go for a race spec wet,

Unfortunately not proper racing. We do sprints against clock, hillclimbs, motokhanas etc. Normal club racing. I probably couldn't warrant a set of wets just for those occasional days of rain so I would be looking at a good set of roadies?
 
Most people, including a back to back test by a magazine (Evo or Autocar) seem to think that Michelins come out best in the wet.
 
I have just shod my A5 all round with Uniroyal Rainsport 3's. I have to say the grip is outstanding. They look pretty trick too.
 
I have just fitted Dunlop ST Sport Maxx RT's to mine, I'm very happy with them so far, very quiet with amazing grip both wet and dry...it will be interesting to see how they do over winter being listed as 'summer' tyres...I don't think this is that relevant for the climate we get here, well certainly not when in the south of the country.

I have had Dunlop sports on the Audi also. Good tyre. I have never fitted winter tyres in the UK. Snake oil in my opinion.
 
I have Pirelli P7’s. Car is not used all year round so can’t comment on the winter performance but they are good in the summer.

On the subject of winter tyres they most definitely are not snake oil. There is a very good reason why they are mandatory fitment in the Nordics and Alpine regions during the winter months and that is that they perform better than summer tyres in low temperatures and in snow which reduces accidents and keeps traffic moving. In the UK, such conditions are rare these days but you will still get better dry grip and better wet grip from a winter tyre than a summer tyre if the temperature is less than 4 or 5 degrees. Compound, construction and tread pattern are all quite different. Horses for courses.

grip so well and look pretty good with the little sharks fins,,,,,,,,,
shame about the big screw that went through the one of the back tyres after a few weeks old but perfect since fixed,,,,,jasonp
 
I initially only had my rears done but the grip was so good that it was putting the front to shame and causing some bad loss of grip at the front. I quickly had the frons done to match and I have to say they are the best tyres I have ever had on the Audi.
 
I'm running Nexen nfera su1's although I have not done many miles on them yet the ride is noticeably more compliant than on the previous tyres.
 
I've been using Nexens on my E39 & current E61 BMW's for years & found them very good-now got them on the rear of the trackday car as well!

They are now listed as an Official Tyre supplier to Porsche specifically for the Cayenne-can't be that much wrong with them.

with respect i choose my tyres because i read lots of good stuff about them fitted to 944s,,,,
budget didnt come into it,,,
I had rainsports on my og s2 also,, if memory serves me well,
each to there own,,jasonp

 
BMW ran Nexens as standard fit for a while, I'm happy with them so farand they are certainly better than the GT radials that were on there previously. I doubt I will wear them anytime soon as the ones they came off still had 5mm on them, only changed them as they were old and hard.

Budget did play a factor but they are an A rated tyre, I've spent a fortune on it this year and not likely to rag the dog's danglies off it.

I have GT Radial Champiro HPY on the 968, and the A4 think they were very good value for money, the A4 has done 22K on the current set and they are just about dead,

but the price has doubled for them this year, so no idea what to go for

Roger, if you just thought about what people are saying, and have a little consideration, you may not attract such a negative reception. (This was the polite PC way of couching this phrase edited from the original "Plain English" which I am pretty sure you would have found offensive.)

You have pretty much said Nexens are cheap rubbish tyres and anyone who fits them doesn't have the skill or perception to know the difference. Was that your intention or is that just the way it comes across?

Can I take it that in you 22 years of being an expert you have first hand experience of Nexen tyres in every situation from track to daily driver?
