TYRES

The N rating has been on Porsche vehicle tyres for a number of years now. The grip afforded by the front and rear tyres on most modern porsches is substantially different as most models now have different front and rear tyre widths. In the past , boxster and other models had the same tyre width front and back. I would suggest that the different N rating front and rear on same width tyres would make more of a difference to the handling of the car , than those models with diferent tyre sections front and back. The wear rate on my 987 is about 1.5X on the rear compared to the front , so the loading is different and expectation of the tyre biased to the rear. One option to consider may be to buy a full set of four and sell on the front tyres as a pair on e bay. Typically 5-6mm tread tyres for porsches sell for about 100- 250 pounds for a pair depending on width and rim diameter. Personally I would only have issue with different N ratings on front vs rear axles if they were also combined with different manufacturers.

Thanks for all the feedback the status so far .I have been on to the OPC and he is taking up the case on my behalf with Porsche but does not want to get my hopes up with a part cost borne by then .I asked how much they would charge for a new Conti Sport 3 N1 and he said £225 told him I can get the same for £155. Despite what some have said Porsche are still addament that you cannot use NO and N1 on the car and will not enter into any issues handling wise and said it could affect warranty which I find stagering .I can get Michelins Pilot sport PS2 NO from Costo for £532 for a set of 4 has anyone got any experiance on this brand wear wise I do not track the car or drive it hard what milage out of then got 10k out the Conti Brian

This thread is getting like an episode of East Enders not that I watch it [:D][:D] Just had a phone call from the OPC and Porsche customer services and they will not enter into any arrangement re costs ,they offered to supply and fit a set off 4 Michelin SP for £620 told i can get the same for £535 I asked for clarification from the OPC as to warranty and he assured me it will not impact on it I asked about the risks of mixing the tyres and they would not comment on this as I would be the only one who could feel any difference in the handling and did agree it would be a get out clause if involved in a accident and the car was found to have different rating tyres on the car The saga continues tune in to next weeks thrilling episode to see what happens[:D][:D] Have a good weekend

Not really sure on wear, my driving styles vary so much from long tours to the occasional track day that it is impossible to quantify it. I did seem to manage to wear a set of rears out on last years Corsica tour but they are extraordinary roads [;)][8D] All said and done I have 17" Michelins Pilot sport N-something on my car and I couldn't be much happier with how it drives. Great grip and feel. Those are the things important to me, wear is not a consideration (sorry!) I think the wear will be worse than the Contis though. But for me the feel would more than make up for that.

i had contis supplied new on my boxter coupe and didnt realise how poor the ride was till i replaced them at 10k miles with the michelin sport n`s-and am never changing again-they have been fabulous-big difference

So to be absolutely crystal clear here, they are saying that you can fit your own tyres and it won't affect the warranty - providing they are all same N-rated? I'm actually surprised their markup isn't more on the Michelin set.

Correct ......I was told by Michelin that their tyres will last longer than any other make that Porsche approve...but not according to you guys

Hi For what it's worth, I recently had to change my original Michelin Pilots and was quoted £1,200 to replace them (not an OPC quote) but the helpful chap stated he could supply and fir 4 Pirelli P Zero for £850. I was happy with the Michelins so was a bit concerned the Pirellis might be inferior, but after asking around I went for the Pirellis. Very happy with them - as grippy as the Michelins and just as comfy a ride. Saved £350 as well, so pleased all round. Just my humble penneth'worth. Rob

£1200 for 4 MPS and £850 for 4 PZRosso's! I had 4 PZR fitted for £507.36 (205/50ZR17 +255/40ZR17 N3) in July this year by Micheldever Tyres. You'd have to live a long way away to get through £350 of petrol to get there. As for N rating - agree this is cobblers. The important bit is the Z and load rating.

I have not checked but I would read the owners handbook advice on tyres. If you can follow that then surely insurance would be OK?

Michelin PS2 have been fabulous on my 987.2 although I don't have experience of other makes. if you research this and other forums like Boxa net you will find a majority in favour of the PS2 amongst those who have tried other makes.

I have found that the Michelin maintains its performance as it wears, whereas other have found the Pirelli is good initially but deteriorates significantly as it wears.
