Unknown warning light in centre console SURROUND

A warning light has started to come on intermittently - it is in the surround in the console, not one of the switches. I didn't know it existed and it isn't in the handbook. Anyone know anything? It is an exclamation mark the same as the one in the switch that switches off after a warning has occurred.
The fact that this warning light existed was news to me because it isn't normally visible because it is 'built in' to the console black plastic and only becomes visible when lit, and is directly above the right-hand switch in the console. So until it lights up, it is just the black plastic trim about 1cm wide. But when it comes on their is a red exclamation mark. It isn't on all the time, and can't determine what it is warning of, because there are no other lights, or symptoms.
I've a feeling there may be lights to do with the original alarm (but I replaced that about 15 years ago) and/or cabrio hood (mine's a C2Cpe), or the switch for leaving movement sensors deactivated if you have a dog in the car (which I don't).
Bugs me that there is no reference to it in the handbook.
I can post a piccy but am guessing peeps will either know what I'm talking about and therefore can answer what it is for, or won't it has never come on for them and therefore don't know it is there! I've had the car nearly 20 yrs and never seen it before.
My Porsche servicer who's been doing them since 1989 doesn't know either.

Do you mean like this?

If so, it's just a back light for the console that comes on when you turn the side and headlights on. As you can see in the pic there should be three back lights. However on most 964s all the original bulbs will have blown by now. Mine are working because I replaced them with LEDs a while ago.

Thanks for replies. Yes it will be bulbs gone - tricked me into thinking it was a warning light, when actually it's only on when lights are on! doh. cheers and merry xmas to all members

Good call Steve......yep my 964 has these, as I've just discovered and yes, they don't glow either, so all my bulbs must also be blown. Any tips on what to do the change them, before I take all the console apart - easy or difficult fix?

Thanks, Robert

Yes Robert, pretty straight forward. You want some 5mm 12V LEDs with integral resistors. I got mine from Maplins:

Then pull off the console and unplug the card with the bulbs on. Remove the old bulbs by heating up the solder with a soldering iron. Bend the legs on the LEDs so they are similar to the old bulbs and attach to the card by simply re-heating the solder.

There's more info about how to do it, including details of polarity when putting in the LEDS (nb. cathode is the short leg on the LEDs when they are supplied), at the link below. However, you don't have to worry about the resistor step.

Many thanks Steve - you are the font of all knowledge.
I'll have a go at that as it's probably within my capabilities. Might wait until the Christmas pud has gone down!
All the best. Robert

And just for those who don't remember their school boy physics, the cathode, with the shorter leg as Steve tells us, is to be connected to the Negative bar and the anode to the Positive side. If they are connected incorrectly, they just don't work rather than blow, as LED's only allow current to flow one way. Physics lesson over.

Mine have also obviously gone so will look to replace them but before I do, should the legends for the rear wing, and on the C4's, the 4WD diff also glow with the lights on?

Rgds,
Kevin.

Job done - an easy fix, that was only a few pence to sort and took less than 20 minutes . LED's from Maplins, bought on line came the next day and now the dash looks complete................and I never knew they were there!
Thanks Steve for the information
Robert

Glad to be of assistance Robert [:)]

Regarding Kevin's question about the spoiler and PDAS symbols (I only have the former on my C2), I'm not sure if they are supposed to light up too. I'll check when I get my car back in a couple of weeks.

Interesting one this...

Only now realised they were there and I've discovered that 2 out of 3 on my car work!

Great info here. I have my LED's on their way and will take a look at the spoiler and PDAS too. Will let you know how I get on.

Having just replaced those three missing red lamps, I now find that the Spoiler and the PDAS lamps have also gone. The only one that is working is the white intermittent lamp which goes on and off when the PDAS kicks in and out (least I think that's what it indicates). So another order to Maplins for a couple of Green LED's for the blown lamps. They are green, as I shone a small torch behind the symbols and they show a green outline - so Green LED's it is. I've also ordered a yellow one as a back up for the white PDAS light, which as it's the only one of six lamps still working, it must be on borrowed time. Pity Maplins don't sell white LED's. I'll just have to work out which is the positive track on the circuit board before I start - as we had the benefit of a photo showing as much last time.........Can't wait to drive the car in the dark now!

Just FYI another RS quirk...

The 964RSL has all three symbols which light up... < Hazards | Central Locking | Exclamation Mark > ...but doesn't have any central locking or even a central locking switch. [&:]

Same for the Cup car. Spoiler light green. Strange enough, they all work on my car, lights very rarely used the last 20 years.

Just completed mine.

I used 3mm LEDs from Maplin, standard brightness. The 3 x red for the top row of lights are fine as is the yellow I used for the traction control. However, I would suggest using 5mm green for the spoiler and PDAS and probably high intensity ones as well. Whilst mine do light up, the light is very central to the legend and dims quite quickly to the edges. I may even change mine at a later date.

One final note, I don't know if it was just my perception but it seemed to me that the holes in the circuit board for the spoiler/PDAS/traction were ever so slightly smaller than those for the hazards/locks/warning. I used a dremmel to open them up slightly.

It's nice to have the lights working now.

Thanks for all the posted here on this.

Rgds,
Kevin.

Just in case anyone want's to stay old school with filament-based bulbs, I have some spare original 964 solder-leg filament bulbs for the center console....

Since I saw this thread I've been keeping an eye out for these lights as I've never noticed them before.

Mine are all working (atm) [;)]
