Sounds good, but wait; Audi RS2:
Fen,
Have you noticed the RS2 for sale in the classifieds of P&P911
How about a Maserati Ghibli Cup, in a nice dark green with tan interior?
I had a look at one of these prior to my 944 - very expensive to maintain and found it a bit quirky.
I have considered an Esprit Turbo in the past, but not this time around. I quite like the idea of something practical as well as fast that can take garden waste to the tip and be fun on a trackday if required (not at the same time though!).
I also just realised I can possibly stretch to the earliest V8 M5's. They are saloons however.
check out the RS2 thread in the General disscussion area, makes interesting reading. Have you thought about an S3? Much newer but around the same price, good space inside, pretty fast and shoud be a bit nimbler in the handling department. Might be a bit cheaper to run as an everyday car by all acounts too.
Rich
I have been out in one as a passenger - I liked the ride, but I do like it knobbly - and the seats are superb. I've never been in a 330 Touring, but please... that's hardly going to be the same.
I have thought about an S3. I've always considered them the thinking man's Impreza and the connoiseur's TT. I've never wanted a TT and I've done the Impreza thing before. A reasonably quick (270bhp if chipped) hatch doesn't compare with a 315bhp estate, although they do have even better seats. I've also considered an S4 Avant which is the same money too, but both the S models are still falling in value but the RS2 has stabilised.
Edited for a typo that made me look even ficker than normal
