very rusty sills

Ok my sills are now too rusty, In fact I put my finger through the drivers side one yesterday. somehow I think that's an MOT fail. Do I have to pay £165 each or can I get any cheaper sills from some where? Will 924 sills fit or am I barking up the wrong tree? Help me please.

Hi Simon,
Yes I think you can get cheaper, non-galvanised, sills elsewhere. Club Autosport (www.clubautosport.co.uk) do a repair panel. If you're planning on keeping the car the OE panels make sense.

Before spending money though it may be worth having the car inspected. If the outer sills are as rusty as you say then I'm wondering how bad the inner sills / floor pan / box section are. Bearing in mind that the sills tend to rust from inside out.

Good luck.

Hi guys,

I am doing the same repair with Club Autosport panels just now. The existing sills only looked "bubbled" but the bodyshop manager says the old ones are rotten. However the rest of the underside is fine.

I'm having photos taken of each step of the repair before a full respray and I'll post more photos as I get them.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've had a good old route around under the car and although there is some rust preasent on the floor pan/box sections, the hammer & screwdriver are'nt going through. which is nice. I'll get the body shop to give me their opinion and then order the sills.Looks like the OE sills to me. I recon the non galv ones would'nt last me very long, I tend to use the car in the winter, and I live at the sea side. Will try and get some photo's up.

Funnily enough, I was told by someone the other day that Hillman Minx sills fit but have to be modified slightly. As they only cost £20 I was told, the labour to do this is a lot cheaper. Anyone done this?
Interesting post db, although I thought the repacement sills were the bit under the door. Do they extend to the rear quarter as well?
PS I'd be really interested to know the costs and location of your bodyshop as you are quite local to me and I could with one of mine fixed.

Hi Paul,

The bodyshop is GS Autos in Dunfermline and the phone number is 01383 626800

If you supply the sills/quarters he is quoting approx. £300 including painting

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. Ouch, that is some corrosion you have there. How big are the rear quarters? Am I right in thinking these go from the back of the front door to the rear of the car? Replacing those must be a major job!

They come in 2 parts - the sill and the 1/4

Attached is the photo from Club Autosports website.

The bodyshop has repaired one side so far. I'll post photos of the repair next week.

You could always spray them with a cold galvanising paint once they are fitted.
The cold galvanising paint is available in spray cans, if you are interested I will find a can in the garage and let you have the details.
I bought my cans from an autojumble some time back - £1 a can or six for £5
Used in on my trailer, worked a treat.
Cheers,

If you could send me some good pictures and details I'd be interested as a potential technical article in the magazine.

One thing is for sure, there won't be any shortage of cars needing sills over the coming years [:(][:(]

I've been told that the latest of acid etch primers are just as good as galvanising you would probably get away with getting the non-OEM sills as long as the metal is a decent quality and not too cheap and nasty. If you give the inside of the sills with Waxoil, make sure that there is plenty of underseal underneath the car and a good layer of Wuth on the outer sill then you should get a good few years out of them.

Having just investigated my car for tinworm I can state that even if the inner wing/sill underseal looks sound get to it at the edges of panels with a screwdriver or chisel. Be aggresive because if it levers off you will find rust behind it (capillary action by water)

Scrape it off until it is stuck and you will see bare galvanising then rust treat and waxoyl.

I'm gradually running along each sill clearing drain holes and treating the minor rust on edges etc and then coating with waxoyl before replacing the skirts.

If you take that plastic vent thingy off the B post and look in the rear quarter section, you will be shocked or pleased, however if you mix some cheap engine oil with Finnegans waxoyl some under body sealer thinned with white spirit and spray it in copiously I mean till it drips all over your living room carpet---what you're not allowed in the living room with the car ? o.k. on the drive then, into that space and up the sills it helps a lot.It doesn't stop rust if its there but slows it down.its aright mess but worth a try its cheaper than new sills.

was it rusted right through to a hole?

If so, how has it been repaired? Has it been patch welded or just patched with filler

It looks like they've done a good repair- new panels and a skim of filler to hide the welded repair seams. You don't want to be seeing weld seams on the sill!

Only thing that worries me is did they use weld thru zinc primer on the inside of the repair?? Other wise rust could start inside the sill again very soon. Best to waxoyl inside after you've got the car back and are happy with the work.
