True. Having had a Morgan built for me in 2008, I can verify that. Could not wait to get rid of it [:D]

i just read the posts here, and the mention of the visit in the club magazine. looks the r13 members had a good day out, the chaps at morgan are always very friendly.

derek, i really think you have missed the point of morgans.

i would be interested to see why you bothered going if you seem to hate them so much, indeed why did you buy one?

Hi Jamie,

Perhaps I should have applified my comments more.

No I don't hate Morgans, quite the opposite. But they are definately not for me.

Why?

Very uncomfortable and quite badly made.

Let me explain.

1. The suspension was designed in the 30s; infact the whole design is years behind a Porsche 356 built in the 50s.
2. The maintenance period is 500 miles... yes really. The front suspension needs greasing every 500 miles, the engine oil has to be changed every 5000 (though quite why I have no idea as the same engine in the Ford Focus needs an oil change every 20,000 miles. Why I queried that, Morgan stated, 'cos we always have done that' []
3. The build quality was shoddy. If you want specifics, ask me. My Morgan went back to the factory on 3 occasions in 9 months. The reply 'They all do that'
4. The price was ridiculous for a kit car... you pay extra for door handles!
5. The handling was diabolical.
6. The handbook looked homemade, something a schoolboy wrote in the 30s.... come to think of it.........................!
7. Rust was appearing within 3 months.
8. I paid extra for the 'easy up hood'. It took 19 minutes and two finger nails each time.
9. I accepted the hood leaking, but water poured in from the bonnet (on to the radio)

So why on earth did I buy one? Well, silly me wanted a vintage car built to modern standards that was reliable. Stupid me!

So what was good?

1. Residual value... excellent.
2. It attracted heaps of attention as it looked fantastic.

Why did I tour the factory? Well it was very interesting. Simple [:D]

interesting, sounds like you got a duff one.

mine's not put a foot wrong in 20 years.

it leaks when it rains but only at the top of the screen (above 60). i have only just spotted a tiny scab of rust but i got the full aluminium body so can't comment on the steel ones.

handling, again it's pretty good. takes some getting used to but it breaks away nicely and a dab of acceleration puts it back in line. not sure why they said that about the oil changes, that does seem odd.

maybe comparing the +8 to the +4 isn't as straight forward as i always thought, and i have not heard of an easy up roof - mines a pvc tarp you chuck over like a tent and then it's a few clips and you're done. takes 2mins with some practice.

from a reliability perspective, mine's been great - i am still unhappy with the boxster and exploding ims and rms, no such problems with a +8. price wise, given the effort that goes into making a morgan i reckon it's fairly priced. yes you get naff all in terms of electrics, gadgets etc, but they are scratch built. i prefer to think of it as a baby aston rather than a kit car given the hand built aspect, which makes it rather better value.

thanks for the perspective though, i guess we're never going to agree!

edit: forgot to ask - 500 miles? that's not the same on mine, the suspension only needs a dab of grease if it squeaks and there's a little pedal in the footwell to do it. i have never touched mine between services (usually every 2 years or so).

Maybe the quality went down hill after the Sir John Harvey-Jones program. He told them to cut costs & they did!

For example:

1. The fuel filler cap was so cheap it corroded after 3 days. I replaced it with a better aftermarket version. Same with the wing mirrors.

2. The driver's leather seat bolster wore through to the original colour after a month. The factory said it was my jeans... I pointed out that my 911 did not have this problem, despite wearing the same jeans.

3. All the instruments misted up after 4 miles and stayed that way for the next 50. Quote' they all do that' []

4. The wire wheels were rusty when I purchased the car .... new! As were the suspension arms.

5. The glove box lock broke after 1 day.

6. I mentioned the leaks.... a sieve comes to mind.

7. The speedometer did not work .... on delivery!

8. The adjustable steering wheel would not adjust.

9. On delivery the bodywork was damaged. This was a brand new car, for heavens sake!

Need I go on? My MX5 (at half the cost), was perfect in comparison.

And hand built... baby Aston ...... words fail me... for once [:D]

At least the power steering did not fail..... perhaps that was because it did not have power steering......

guess you've never had an aston or bentley!

really does sound like a duff one. the dials are a common problem, happens on Lotus too, were they VDO? the problem is they get too hot as there is not heat proofing to speak of and because they are so well sealed they mist up. as for the rest, fair enough that does sound pretty poor.

i'm not sure what you were expecting though. underneath they are quite modern, however with the styling and design they always leak, always too hot, always bumpy and rattley. that's kind of what they do. sounds like it was a mistake for you from the start, sorry to hear it.
