The cause of the hairline crack in the head was a bit of a mystery...the engineering company who did the work stated when asked that they didn't believe it was due to high boost (I have two Apexi settings for 1.3 and 1.5 bar respectively with boost protection set at 1.5) nor was it stress, they had never seen a hairline crack like this before, which was just below the elbow mentioned, the crack was only on the top of the head, there was no damage along the head/block mating surface hence why I only had issues with coolant.
This left me thinking that perhaps it was due to a combination of the extra thick HG and the raceware studs even though they were torqued correctly and unlikely as the crack was only along the top? just in case when I put it back together this week I'm going to change the tightening sequence adding more stages to allow for the thicker HG. Anyway this is where I was at until both my son and wife reminded me of an incident in the workshop that I had forgotten about and then it all fell into place, last year I had accidentally dropped a lump of cast iron onto the head in the area damaged while moving it( much cursing/swearing involved), this must be the culprit as it was a heavy lump which hitting that part with the coolant void beneath now makes sense.
I hope to be at Rutland next month which I may just be able to do within the limited mileage that I have left, if i don't get carried away with some driving in this glorious sun that is...

I hadn't thought about selling them on...I'm a terrible hoarder for 'just in case scenarios' hell I still have the standard set of injectors, they must have been off the car for more than 10 years now?....If I do manage to fit 80's before Rutland and if I do decide to pass them on I'll let you know...first refusal is yours sir...

Hi Paul
finally got some time on the car today, hopefully ready to start tomorrow..we forgot the new LED light boards that my son needs to make up for the binnacle so couldn't start the car, plus battery was flat...lol..
anyway we did get around to testing the injectors...they are indeed low impedance at 2.5 ohms?...so not the 4.7 ohms that Porsche states....I can't remember were I bought these from now but they were certainly from a Porsche specialist so an interesting discovery. Now this could cause the driver chip to overload, it clearly hasn't as the car has had these injectors for at least 11 years with no issues at all and she gets pushed hard? So I may try my other son's 80lb low impedance injectors off his cossie to see how they run....a little R&D ahead it seems...
cheers

From what I've read the low impedance injectors only cause problems if they are run near to full duty cycle for prolonged periods, so the larger the injector the less likely the drivers will over heat. Perhaps that's why some tuners dispensed with the ballast resistors for the big injectors, ie the 80lbs that seem the norm now. Maybe send John at Vitesse a message and see what he says ? In any case the 2 resistors seem simple to fit, just 2 wires to splice into near the DME.
Paul.

Having said all that I'm unlikely to push her hard, I'm getting old these days and have slowed down a lot, perhaps I should sell her and buy a Morris minor...

Ha ha! Not just me then. It's not that I'm paranoid, it's just that everybody is watching!!blade7 said:[] I don't drive really fast as much as I used to on 4 or 2 wheels these days, been there, done that for over 30 years. The chances of an unmarked plod following in/on something you wouldn't expect is too risky. Unless it's over 10 years old or I can check out the driver first I keep under ban speed.

Oh I'm very much like that, sounds like Stuart is too......nice and sedate until that red flag is waved and I know it's not the boys in blue...happened early today in fact.....one of those Audi RS things, nice looking car......i won't mention velocity achieved but let's just say I got there extremely quickly and ahead of the other German marque, only a short blast though.....nice dry road long sweeping bends, 3 lanes, I had just come off the on ramp...anyway it was more a road test to check she was behaving since the new pump had been fitted. It's been a bit of a roller coaster in recent days, first head, then water pump, next top hose and lastly fan. Each time I thought the problem had been solved another showed, it's clear now that the pump, head and hose were all leaking in unison....lol The fan played up last night when I took my wife out for a meal, I was beginning to wonder if she would ever play ball , the car that is not my wife.....quick trip to my son's garage this morning sorted the fan ( dodgy multiplug) ...and so this saw me road testing the car when the interlude happened for which I'm grateful as I wouldn't have pushed the car this far without that red flag....hit 64% throttle and 1.1 bar boost.....that's very naughty of me, I hadn't gone over 23% throttle and 0.5 bar since putting the head back on....bad audi....
