Want some FUN?

Hi Gary. Yes. Yes. Yes. Never said I didn't like sat nav though.

I think the worst thing about that 'box was that the only way I could tell what gear I was in was by looking at the little indicator on the clock. The best way to describe the drive is to that of a dodgem car. Having driven the "traditional" tiptronic I can say that it's a better drive than the PDK - miles better. With the PDK there's zero feel between gears - at least with the tip you get the feedback from the car with regards to what it's doing for you. I can see why they needed the PDK in a 24 hour LeMans car, you wouldn't want to be kicked in the arse each time those things changed gear for hours on end. But it just doesn't translate to a road car - unless you want a car which you can just put you left arm on the arm rest and cruise around in. And in which case I would recommend a nice, economical Merc CLS CDI 350 with plenty of tellys and wood and leather!

When I drove the car I just knew that if I bought one I'd play around with the gear change buttons for a few weeks and then just leave it in auto and I think that's what most people who are persuaded to buy one will do.

But that is the point! It is so smooth. That is because the revs hardly change and the changes are lightning fast. That equates to performance. Forget your ancient Tiptronic. If you want old technology, buy a 1960 Ford with a 3 speed Borgwarner gearbox. Then you know you have changed gear, and bumped your head on the windscreen in the process! [:D]
