Wanted - 944 Cup Magnesium Alloys

ORIGINAL: Eldavo

Simkin911 has/had white Cup1s on his red 968 - looked great.

White rims are horrendous for cleaning (and not suited to 'non cleaner' like me).

Pete, I'd guess few (if any) folk would want you to leave the forum and FWIW I understand you're also a top bloke in person. I guess some written misunderstandings here. There is also an additional way to resolve this 18 in rim debate. Lend me your car for a long weekend and I'll do a Highlands tour in it and then report back to the forum on my findings? I'll even supply the fuel.

Just woke up after a long but excellent day at the NEC for the Classic Car Show to find lots of missed messages on this thread.

In anticipation I logged on hoping to have people offering me numerous sets of magnesium wheels for £2.50 a set [:)]

What I have found is another thread that has deteriorated into something totally off the original subject [] is it me or the way I word my threads, but every one of my threads either invites controversy or starts arguments??

Regarding 18" wheels this has been running on one of the Facebook 944 pages for over a week now with hundreds for them (with pictures to show) and the same amount who are against them for varying reasons (looks, handling, ride quality etc.) But basically it is a wide world and everyone is entitled to their choice even if we disagree with it.

Back to this thread I knew Pete was having a little friendly dig at me (we have never met, but have spoken quite a lot and have assisted each other) I along with a few others have found him very helpful and willing to assist where necessary. I take his comments as tongue in cheek and will wait for my moment of revenge [:D]

I was having a long discussion with a few Committee Members of another car Club I am a Member of yesterday and we were in agreement that Forums, Facebook and PM's cause lots of arguments, fallouts and disagreements mainly due to the fact that written words can often be taken out of context and sometimes people say things behind a keyboard that they wouldn't say face to face in a pub!! We are all hopefully here to have a good time, meet new people and learn/share knowledge on the cars we own (or wish to own) and I like being on here but it doesn't replace meeting people face to face to have a chat, especially at Shows.

Can we draw a line under this and get on with the job of finding me a set of magnesium wheels for £1.00 now as I feel this post deserves a discount [8D]

Sorry for the long ramble but life too short and I have another post to write regarding the standard of some of the PCGB cars on display at the NEC [:-]

This statement is the best that could have been written.

It takes all types of different personalities to make a group, and whilst at times Pete does come across in a way he didn't intend, in person that is far from his true character, there have been many posts on this forum that could have been described as requiring censorship or indeed could be described as antagonistic, are they all reported? are many forum users subjected to calls to be banned? I do get the impression that a witch hunt may possibly be in place, and on this occasion not justifiable.

Please gentleman can we now leave this thread to its original purpose?

Rude! Are you having a laugh?! TTM, you kept making a point of calling me MATE, when we have never met. Then go on to slag
off cars that run on 18's all over my "joking" comments to Martin! I find your attitude rather RUDE! What, in any of my posts in
this thread, have I said that comes across as rude?! If my using the word SH-T has caused offence to the populace of this forum,
so much so that they ALL phone up or E-Mail the moderator to complain about me then, they have all lead very sheltered lives or,
else ought to get a life and stop whinging about trivia FFS [:(]. Thank you for all the apologies made on my behalf Paul, you really
shouldn't of bothered. I'm also very sorry for spoiling your family life. Never my intention. But, that's all I am going to apologise
for [8|]. SO, before all rush of further complaints come hurtling your way Paul, along with the knives and daggers, let me just say
here that if you want me to leave this forum for good, along with PCGB then, I will do so without further comment.

Looks like you still have not understood my message. Nevermind [:)]

Martin, I apologise for corrupting your original posting, I really don't know how that happened [8|]! However, if I come across a
set of light weight Teledials on my travels, I will buy them for you and stick 'em on a courier to Jock land [:D] (I still think they
would look rubbish though [;)]). I will leave this thread to it's original purpose by starting another (my last). Many thanks [:)].

Pete, I believe that Thom is a Frenchman speaking brilliant English. If I am correct then it is easy to see how small misunderstandings can occur.

are many forum users subjected to calls to be banned? I do get the impression that a witch hunt may possibly be in place, and on this occasion not justifiable.

Hi Andy,

Yes. In short, there are often calls for someone who consistently flouts the forum rules to be removed. I've personally removed a couple of people recently, and am sure the other admins have done the same where necessary.

I argued hard last time Pete was the subject of complaints, so I find it hurtful that it seems to be me getting the two-faced comments, but he was on a final warning all that time ago.

This forum has a no-swearing rule. If people don't like it, they can either not use the forum to post, or go somewhere else! There's always the option of changing the rules, in which case campaign to the Board, not the moderators.

As with Scotty before, it always seems to be the mods who are seen as being behind asking people to play by the rules. Whether we like the person involved or not there would be no issue if they just moderated their own language! [&o]

Martin, are the mags your after the correct offset as the early Cup Cars that these wheels were fitted to will be early offset ??

ET is 60 Jim and I've been told they will fit the Turbo as, but if you can give me guidance it will be appreciated [:)]

Sorry we didn't get more time to chat on Friday at the NEC, but there is never enough time to see all the Show in one day [:(]

Need to look into it, i think that sounds about right for the rear of a later car, my cups are ET55 but i cannot remeber what the fronts are, my 944 is at the other garage at the moment so i cannot pop and check, yes no worries about Friday way too much to see, Saturday was a nightmare as it was heaving !!

Who manufactured the Magnesium teledials in the first place? there might be some issues with old ones being brittle, see also below from pistonheads

"Ok its an old post.. but just to help.. I refurb wheels, have done for a long time now, magnesium wheels are a complete bind.. and there's no easy answer, a lot of companys won't touch them and with good cause. magnesium as we all know is very unstable and oxidises very repidly when in contact with air/ water/ salt/ acids.. the process to redo them is not quite as straight forward as acid strip etch prime and powdercoat!!

firstly yes you have to be VERY wary of acid stripping, it has to de done, however the timing is critical.. stripping acid will not only etch magnesium badly, but will also soak into the metals pores, they have to be bathed and bathed and bathed and soaked in alkaline solution before the next stage!

bead blasting, this has to be done at a low pressure as magnesium is a soft and easily damaged metal, also the risk of blasting any residues deep into the porus structure of the wheel is an issue..

after the blasting stage the true extent of corrosion is VERY evident, particularly where wheel weights have been attached.. I have seen 50% + of the actual stock completely gone where the weights have been!!, the other prime damge area is where the brake disc sits, you tend to get 2 big grooves where the brake dust has been thrown out from the pads on either side of the disc, I'v seen this so bad before that its almost rotted the wheel into two pieces!!.. at this stage you have to decide if the wheel is even safe anymore..

next comes a process called out gassing.. most wheel restorers wont even know about this and wonder why when they paint the wheels big air bubbles appear.. magnesium creates gas.. deep in the pores.. when sealed in it will build up and pop up big air blisters.. the answer is to heat them, allow them to cool and paint them immediately!!.. this will 99% stop the problem..

corrosion removed and structural integrity ascertained you then etch prime, high build prime, and paint either with powdercoat (cheap and in my opinion not recomended for mag) or a good 2k base and clear..

job done.. problem is that even the slightest contamination, or chip or scuff will set the mag off again.. basically mags are an ongoing problem and to my best knowledge cannot ever be gauranteed to last problem free for years..

so there you are.. the (I think) definitive answer about mag wheels.. personally I hate doing them, I mainly do ferrari ones and maserati, chromadora's and campagnolo's, and frankly the results can be dissapointing, as even though structurally sound the end result invariably shows some level of deep pitting..
