Just joined last night and wish everyone a merry christmas. Since I was a kid I loved both the 924 and 944 and I still do but sadly lack any great knowledge of them. I am looking to buy one of the models but I am limited in a number of ways. I am a student in Glasgow and can only part with a max of around £1400, I have seen a fair amount of both models on sale for less than 1k. Given the age of the cars is this a normal price or worth staying away from?

What would you all recommend the 924 or the 944? What are the insurance groups? I have read that the turbo models can be drastically more expensive for parts than the lesser models is this true? What should I look out for when looking at a specific car? If anyone knows of any for sale please dont hesitate to tell me although I am looking to later january to buy.

Think thats about it.

Thanks, Gordon

This is also up in the general area so please excuse the double message.

For the record I have recieved insurance quotes for the Lux 924 and they are around £350 mark.

Personally, I would say the 2 litre 924 before electronic ignition is the simplest to work on but you will be talking about a 30 year old car.
Ask to see the car jacked up on the offical jacking points on the bodyshell - if this is declined, there may be expensive welding.
Depends if you can put up with jibes that it is not a 'real Porsche'?
Get the best you can afford with as few apparent faults as possible, but ensure the price reflect its history.
A few owners and OPC service history, look for evidence that it has been cared for.
Get the best condition bodywork as panels are getting difficult to find now and resprays are pricey.
Look at the forum FAQs.
Insurance costs can be reduced by going to a specialist and opting for a 'limited mileage' policy.
I'm paying £110 fully comp. but are somewhat older than you.

Thanks Vince. Im not bothered about jibes not something that would put me off. good advice with the jack points I was stung on a car badly when I was younger with welding. Certainly learn from my mistakes. Im seeing a lot of dash board cracks why is this?

What are the common faults I should be aware of? preferably the most expensive that should set alarm bells ringing but would perhaps not be obvious to someone with my limited knowledge?

Lots of the info you are looking for can be found on the web, google is your friend

Plus many others.

I'd buy a 924 NA to start with, easier and slightly cheaper to work on, but both 924 and 944 have heaps of second hand spares on forums and ebay. Many parts can still be bought at reasonable prices from Porsche Centres. Later 924S and 944's seem to be more prone to rusting in the sill area more so than the earlier cars as long as they have been looked after. Stay away from turbos unless you know what your buying or have deep wallet, there will always be some work to spend on.

Cracked dash tops are from 30 years of UV damage. Very few out there without some signs of cracks to some that look like the Grand Canyon.

If you need it for daily transport then buy the best you can afford. If you buy cheap with a view of a rolling restoration the likelyhood will be it fails when you need it most.

Had a read through about 10 buyers guides this morning. Just need to find some local cars now. I think I am swaying to the 924 over the 944 now its more 80's I think. Ive seen the NA mentioned but cant seem to find an example and the difference of the model, could you help there?

N/A just means naturally aspirated, so not a turbo model. Unless it says "turbo" a 924 is always n/a.

2 models to look at, the standard 2.0 or the later "S", which has the 2.5 Porsche engine from the 944.

Cringe! Thanks though. Cant believe how helpful people have been on here. Hopefully someone selling is as helpful [;)]

(as i am in the xmas mood)

Gorden, i am selling my 944S2. it is a good solid car with a very smooth/good engine and gearbox, good exhaust.( i use my cars and look after them well) it's pretty tidy inside & out, runs and drives beautifully, it is a super everyday car. but, it has got the wrong driverside front wing fitted which isn't a great fit. i've been unable to trace a proper 944S2 wing for it so i have left it as is and enjoyed using the car.
it's black with black leather interior. seats are in good condition. carpet drivers side a little bit worn but, i have bought mats that hide (protect) it well.

i am willing to part with this car (to you) for £1000. as it is now in need of new fuel lines (approx £400 of work & parts) these done and you will have yourself a bargin. it has MOT untill April 2009, it will needfuel lines done for then.
i was going to give the car to my daughter but, shes not interested in Porsche [&o] with replacmentwing and fuel line done this car will be worth over £3k.

this picture shows the slightly ill fitting front wing

in the last year we have treated the car to a new battery and also a new radio/CD with bluetooth

What mileage is it done and does it require any other work? Sorry for the number questions I too am based in Glasgow have always wanted one but do not want to travel huge distance to be disapointed

This offer is only open to Gorden (as his first to ask & as a student on a budget i'd hate to see his Porsche enthusiasm erroded by him wasting his money on a money pit.) Car has been very well looked after (as all my cars are) as we have been using it daily. its done approx 125k miles has had 10 owners from new.it has suprisingly little signs of rust and is in (appart from things i've already mentioned) very good order. i bought the car April 2010 and took it straight to Porsche specialist Zentrum for a check over & major service. i won't lie to you it's not a perfect car (hense the price) but its a good honest car and has been 100% reliable.
my daughter lives in Shotts so (weather permitting) there is a chance i could deliver the car to scotland.

(Gorden-sorry i haven't replied to your PM for some reason my reply keeps returning undelivered)

A wonderful offer all round it would seem and with possible delivery chucked in! Gordon, job done it would seem. There is NO DOUBT that Helen Goff (who I don't know at all by the way) could easily raise more than £1k for this car on here, Ebay, Pistonheads or wherever. There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche and ALL cars need some work but this car is worth more in parts alone than what you can buy this for. At this price many posters on here would consider buying it as another car for their collection!

I genuinely think it's a no-brainer and offered at a very generous price. Excellent example of festive spirit it would seem! Well done.

Oh Gordon, by the way, ignore everything you read on this forum....

Black is definitely the best and fastest colour.

If gordon for sum unknow reson was unable to take the car you be interesting selling it I have been looking at them for years but never been able to get one I have Wanted one since I was 15 years after friend had one but circumstance have never allowed for me to get one only now. sorry Gordon I was not trying to beat you to this car I was interested for much the same reason you are always wanted one could never afford one.

Sorry if I offend anyone

Cheers David
