Warranties

My Boxter S is nearly 3 years old with 15,000 miles and the warranty will soon be up for renewal. I hear Porsche are to increase the cost to £1400 from 1st October which is a big increase. Does anyone know if I can renew early at the old cost of £895?

Alternatively, Tescoes offer their "Finest" warranty for £419 for my car (they won't cover 911's) but it looks pretty comprehensive. Warranty direct want between 1 and 1.7K.

What do you reckon? Porsche are taking then piss, again. I could leave it altogether but if the engine detonates ......

I think the new Porsche scheme will be less than that for a 987, but the benefits are far wider and much closer to the manufacturer's new car warranty.

It will be interesting to compare the differences, but I think the new one might be worth the extra.

The Tesco scheme might suit someone wanting a degree of protection for a more limited outlay.

From the wee booklet: "renewal ... can be purchased up to eight weeks prior to expiry of a ... warranty". There's nothing in writing about how long before expiry, but I asked my dealer if I could renew now (11 months left!) and they said no. The new warranty covers virtually eveything other than wear and tear, but if you pay the old price, you get the old warranty.

There are at least three other threads on the Porsche warranty increase, if you'd like to read all the hoohaa!

I purchased a warranty from Warranty Works (www.warrantyworks.co.uk) and have had quite a bit of work carried out under warranty using our Region 27 guru, George McMillan. It cost about £250 and has been good value for me. I'll get another one when it runs out. Definately worth a look.

Regards

Geoff

They mean within the 8 weeks before it expires [:D]

I've just renewed my extended warranty, but is that right - it is really going to increase to £1400?

What kind of message are Porsche sending about the quality and reliability of their engineering if you combine that with the mean 2 year warranty from new?

Maybe they want to kill off some demand and recreate some lost exclusivity...[;)]

The new warranty price for a Boxster is £1250 ans includes the 111 point check that now must be completed every time a warranty is issued. It makes a mockery of having the cars serviced every 2 years if every year you have to take the car for half a day to get it checked out. Porsche say the warranty is now more inclusive covering bushes and rubber hoses - trouble is they still have a wear n tear clause, so any rubber hose that fails at 6 years old is probably wear n tear anyway. It does now include PCM replacement, which is better for those that have that unit fitted.

Whatever warranty you take out be aware of the conditions and financial limits of the particular warranty. Recently I had to advise an owner who had suffered the dreaded IMS failure, her car was just over three years old, bought from a non Porsche dealership with a "warranty", when she needed it her cover was only up to £6000. After I spoke to her she went to Porsche who covered the £3500 difference for an engine replacement.

Maybe the service departments are down on work as they don't have so many PDI's to carry out. I have also heard that many are now stretching their service intervals.

They will now have plenty of 111 point checks to fill the void.

I had the porsche extended warranty and felt it was a poor product : interior vents fell apart (at 2 years old), - not covered, the interior alarm sensor was unresposnive- not covered, the door microswitch didn't operate at the correct point - not covered , the windows get a greasy film when lowered - not covered. If I were to venture to get the "all new" porsche warranty, I would ask about these items if they were covered before parting with any cash. At the moment i've a warranty direct policy (600 pounds for the year and no special porsche check required) that can be paid month by month and has already paid out without quibble for a gearbox linkage (repaired in europe!). It does have some limitations around gaskets and seals but will cover the IMS up to the value of the car. The smaller stuff I can live with paying for myself , if the policy is reasonable priced. Just remember that the porsche warranty is provided by a third party and not porsche , so buying from another provider can make better sense if its cheaper and offers a level of cover you are happy with.

Warranties imho are either a good idea or a waste of money depending on personal viewpoint.
I can certainly see the logic with berty987's approach, but I have taken out another year of Porsche extended warranty for my 997S today after it's main service so that cover is continued.
For me, it's peace of mind and I have generally found Porsche to be more willing in the case of goodwill if the customer has shown it in return(serviced every year by OPC and Porsche warranty taken out). Hopefully, I will never need to test it, but it's peace of mind for me plus breakdown cover/assistance on the Continent which is an added plus for me.
You pays your money and you takes your chances I suppose.....[;)]

Rob, you are correct in what you are saying , but the european cover is provided by the RAC, so if you already have other cars covered in the household as part of family cover , you are paying twice for the additional porsche cover .I take your point on the goodwill items , but in most cases porsche only cover small items under this policy. Certainly I would advise anyone to shop around before paying up for the porsche warranty, evaluate the risks and exactly what you are getting for your money. My main concern is IMS failure or radiators / engine, the policy I have covers these at a fair price.

i have had a look at these warranties - warranty direct was pretty steep, tesco seemed the best at 420 ish.....my main concern is a big job like RMS rather than little things....seems most electrical items aren't covered anyway. has anyone had any experience of claiming through tescos?

When was the "new" Porsche warranty introduced? I renewed mine in August, paid £895 and didn't have to have another 111pt check.

Will be introduced as of the 1st of October, 2008. You are on the old cover so does not include PCM, coolant tank, etc now covered in the new policy.... on your next renewal you will need a 111 point check and will be covered under the new policy.

if you come off the warranty can you go back on at a later date? my wife's toyota policy states you have to roll back to back so if you don't renew then you're done (300 for three years though!). i am doing a miniscule mileage a year at the moment (500-1,000) so if its 1,250 for a porsche warranty i might take my chances......or a tesco warranty. as before my main worries fall in line with berty987.

with the 111 point check, anyone know how much that costs and whether it picks up potential RMS/IMS failures? my experience with warranties in general is that normally its a 'sorry, that's wear and tear' so i'd rather get a cheaper/matching policy and have preventative checks done instead.

With the new policy (from 1 Oct) you can let it elapsed and get the compulsory 111 point check, fix whatever is picked up by the check and start the policy any time. Even now you can let it elapse and get the point check before getting the policy but you saved on the points check (think about £250) if you renew straightaway. This will no longer be the case from the 1st of Oct...

i have taken a "holiday"from warranty this yr[:D]and saved £895 but will prob renew in a few months ,at MOT time unless ive got a gen 2 997 by then[;)]
