WARRANTY SURVEY

My 997TT came out of manufacturers warranty in October last year and I took out the new style warranty for 2 years. I didn't research it exhaustively and relied on the general concept of it providing "bumper to bumper" cover.

I had no sooner done so than I had a non start conditon at home. Porsche Assist (AA/RAC) attended and diagnosed a faulty starter motor. Car was taken away to OPC on a truck ostensibly for repair under warranty. OPC diagnosed the problem as the VTS and guess what that is not included in the bumper to bumper cover. They wanted me to pay for a new VTS unit £600 plus fitting etc. I refused but took the matter up with Cobra who run the VTS for Porsche. They solved the probem with a software reset on the VTS plus new batteries in the fob.

In the end no cost to me except a fair bit of time but it does still concern me that the VTS has an engine inhibit function which will imobilise your car and to that extent VTS is an integral part of the engine system yet there is no way that you can extend the warranty on it.

As an aside I no longer neeed VTS for insurance purposes (one upside of falling prices I suppose) so will probably not renew the premium when it expires.

Hi Gary,
The car hasn't actually gone in for the warranty renewal yet, but when it does, you can see that the module doesnt work as it says 'Internal Phone Not Available', every time you start the car on the PCM display.
So I thought I'd pre-empt things and see if it can be excluded from the new waranty. (Which it cant)

After speaking with Darren in parts at OPC Cambridge yesterday, the module is half the price that OPC Hatfield had quoted!
It's a Motorola unit (and they take your old unit), at £325 inc vat with a modified connecting cable.

I'm in the process of selling my car, so the new owner wants to extend the warranty now......
