Wastegate from U.S. ?.

Has anyone here used a Tial 38mm wastegate with the adaptor plates ?, reason for asking is they are a reasonable price in the states and I've thought about importing one, also could I avoid the vat & import duty by getting a relative to send it to me ?.
 
Me too, RPM sell the Tial wastegate but its not that cheap. Also I dont think they fit on early 220bhp cars, somthing to do with the link pipe. I will dig the email I got from RPM out and have a read again.
 
Yes. A few years ago, I and many others here got in on a Group Buy for the TiAL 38mm from www.speedforceracing.com The fitment was fine and the WG is a good product but make sure the adaptor plates are bolted tightly to the WG before fitting it to the car as a few of us got caught out when they started to loosen off. The US seem to have a lot more of the 220 cars than we did and they don't have a problem, just make sure you specify wat you have when you order
 
Someone in the U.S. is selling the wastegate kit with pre drilled bolts and lockwire, the price seems to be around $380, but if customs here open the parcel you would get hammered for vat etc. How did the group buy work Paul.
 
Alternatively it seems you can convert a standard wastegate to dual port, I'd like to see a pic or drawing before I drilled another hole in mine though.
 
This is the email from Darran at RPM, it seems to say you can only fit the Tial to the later cars.

'We have a dual port wastegate on the shelf. The wastegate pipes need to be remanufactured to take the DPW. We have these pipes on the shelf on an exchange basis for the style of crossover pipe with the detatchable spigot pipe but not the earlier crossover pipes that your car is likely to have. If you look under the car and work from the back of the car forwards along the exhaust you will find there is a smaller diameter section of pipe running parallel to the main exhaust. There is a junction followed by a 12-15" length of pipe, then the Porsche single port wastegate, the either a small 4" spigot pipe or the wastegate fixes straight onto the crossover.

I you have the later crossover I can supply you with the DPW and wastegate pipes for £495+VAT and delivery. Unless you send your wastegate pipes over at the point of order there will be a £95 surcharge returnable upon receipt of the wastegate pipes

looks like the cost from SFR is around $400 + shipping & taxes, including an adaptor (would the adaptor avoid what Darren is referring to as "remanufacturing the wastegate pipe"?)

I can't see that being much more than £350 delivered, and I know SFR will discount for group buys.

JMG supply / fit the TIAL - does anyone know what adaptor they use?

They make their own in-house (it's probably that very nice man called SimonP [:D] )

The groupbuy we got in on supplied the WG and the adaptor plates for $290 + $75 shipping which worked out at just under £200 back then. Most of us got spotted for the import and VAT and got a seperate bill for £90 a few weeks later, but it was still a bargain at under £300 all in

I think it's only the very, very early 220's that had the different tube. John Sims certainly had no problem fitting one to his E reg 220 (okay it nearly fell off a few weeks later coz we didn't tighten up the bolts but hey [&:] )
 
Bought mine from SFR, they put the value on the invoice at a lower (much lower) price - little import duty and delivery was around £15.

I'm glad you had a better experience with them than I did. I eventually (months later) got almost everything I paid for, but even that seemed to take a lot of work [:mad:]. A real shame as they seem to make some nice products.

Problem with this approach is that the diaphram in your wastegate will be shot. And even then it wouldn't survive the welding process. The only person I've read about who converted a stock item disassembled it, carried out the cutting and welding in a disassembled state and reassembled it (tricky as the original diaphram housing halves are crimped/crushed) with a replacement diaphram.

Alot of work requiring specialist skills and tools vs. $380. I know which route i'd choose. I went for a Lindsay Racing DPW and they re-manufacutre original wastegates by discarding the diaphram altogether and installing their own manufactured in house. Therefore they retain the stock cast body so there is no installation issues and you can re-use the original hangar. With the Tials because they are universal wastegates they are held in place via the exhaust which I don't like. However they seem to be good units but I have heard of a few people who have had problems with Tials. My Lindsay Racing unit seems to be working fine so far - however it was more expensive than the Tial unit.
 
Bear in mind the originals are quite prone to cracking through the body. For that reason alone I would never go for one that is based on the original.

You're never going to put it back to standard (are you?) so worst case it's only pipe and flanges and any exhaust fitting place (real one, as opposed to branches of any of the chains of knowledge-less parts fitters) could fab up something which would be better than a bolt-on solution. You can't see it unless you go out of your way when its fitted so it doesn't even matter if it's a bit ugly.
 
No probs with my LR one either, its at least four years old,i don't think they are that bad? and they do bolt straight on.We should do a survey!!
 
I wouldn't have thought there's much difference between the LR or Tial, it's only the core charge thing that made me consider the Tial, so who is ready to order one rather than just thinking about it ?.

To be fair I don't know of a modified one having cracked, but I do know of quite a number (6-10) of standard ones cracking through the body and as that part is re-used I can't see how they would be any less prone to it than stock ones.
 
Paul, I am ready to order one, so count me in. As long as it will fit an 85 car I am happy. Are you thinking a group buy?

Tom, it's a possibility but I've no idea how a group buy is arranged. My mum lives in Arizona but I reckon it would end in tears if I asked her to arrange something with SFR.
