water pumps

Thanks for that input Jon, good to hear some detail about the actual failure mechanisms observed. I think i'll definitely get my pump changed later this year. Funnily enough I was chatting to the chap on the parts desk at the Nottingham OPC yesterday as I was ordering a new sunroof switch, and mentioned what is the best way to get the best price for owners of older cars where there seems to be a great discrepancy in the competitiveness of OPC prices with some parts quotes being competitive or even the cheapest around, and other parts are a factor of 2 or more, more expensive than other soruces. The chap actually invited me to always challenge the OPC on price as they have a network where prices can vary depending upon what stock levels they are holding for that particular part across the network. So I think i'll take him up on that challenge and test it. I know for a fact that last time I needed new brake discs they did a 'deal' and I got the discs cheaper than anywhere else and I also got my steering u/j shaft cheaper than any breakers would sell me a potentially knackered used one.

Slightly off topic : why do you chaps in the UK often have to replace the UJ shaft? Is it because it's located very near the exhaust manifold and gets cooked somehow?

Yes, RHD only. Classic symptoms are a wobbly steering wheel, similar to if your wheels were not balanced, for the first 5 mins or so of the journey while the heat from the exhaust manifold heats the rod, expands it to take up the wear in the u/j's. Eventually the wear becomes such that even when the rod has expanded there is still play in the U/J's and still some wheel wobble. The shaft usually retails for about £60 - £80 depending upon which OPC you call, breakers were doing them for about £40 at the time, however when I rang the OPC for one about 3 yrs ago I got a new one for £40. Prices have since gone back up.
