Hi All

I am after any old water pumps for any 944 / 968 they can be totally worn out, if they have Steel impellors I will pay for shipping

Please PM me

Thanks

I'll have one next month when the new one is fitted, I'll keep it if it has the steel impellor.

Is this for a refurb ? i spoke to a company last year who were very helpfull and explained that due to the process of removing the bearing it destroyed the plastic impellor but if it was the metal one they could replace it and give a lifetime gauranty. Unfortunatly both of my old ones have plastic impellors but the new replacements from Rose Passion were metal so when the time comes.. Due to age I can not remember the name of the company.

sort of if it goes to plan I have a man that can make replacement metal impellors, and refurb the pumps but I need a few to get it started

Hi, I am about to replace my water pump on my 944S2, the old one has a plastic impeller. What are the thoughts on metal Vs plastic? thanks Dave

I remember hearing about 928 water pumps failing because the plastic impeller would sort of loosen around the shaft... I would imagine it could happen with a 944 pump too although I have not experienced it myself or heard about such a failure among local friends. In fact I don't think I have ever seen a 944 water pump with a plastic impeller yet.

I'm taking my car in for belts/tensioner/chain etc on tuesday to Auto2000 in Bedford so I'll ask them and get back to you if I get any off them.

I do remember long ago stories of plastic impellers slipping on the shaft, but I'm sure those days are gone, the newer plastics used are much better than the early types and are now as good as metal. Think the major failures were ford Zetec engines and I did hear of some on 944/968 as well but that was 10 years ago or more. The idea with plastic is if you get a frozen engine and start up the impeller slips instead of stripping the cam belt sounds about lame but could be true

don't chuck your plastic one out, I think my pump guy is making new steel impellors, if I can send him enough to make it worth while. If it becomes a viable project then everyone can send away the pumps for refurbishment for silly money and get them back with a lifetime warranty should be able to do 944 early small impellers 944 larger impellers 968 and 928 as well.

Sorry Waylander, I tried and failed to get any off Auto 2000 - they checked but didn't have any (if they had he was happy to give them).

I had a Audi 80 2.6 V6 Avant around 15 years ago, it was well known for the plastic impellor to detach around 120k, sure enough mine did. Audi only supplied replacements on exchange. Cant remember if the new pump was different.

I guess there is a bit off conflicting information on all metal and plastic impellers some places you read it has to be plastic because the metal one will drill its way through your block and cause massive damage then you read must be metal as the plastic spins on the shaft and you blow your engine up. who do you believe, what is correct. think they used for plastic in the start a kind of bakerlite material, this has now been replaced with a material called PPM no i dont know what it stands for. so i guess its upto personal choice but i cant currently get plastic ones rebuilt

There are 944 water pumps with plastic impellors?!?!?!? Never seen a genuine Porsche 924/924S/944/968 pump with a plastic impellor. For those who have removed them from their cars, who installed them? I have seen some Boxsters with plastic impellors, quite often they fail where the fins have snapped off, but I have not paid enough attention to work out if that is just a particular range of years of manufacture, or certain Boxster models (986/987/981) or if they are aftermarket ones we have removed.. But I am pretty sure the new ones from Porsche always have metal impellors again. If someone out there manages to get these rebuilt, that could save a lot of people a fortune. We could not fit them ourselves in the workshop, as I would probably want to sit back for the next 10 years to make sure I do not hear horror stories about them falling apart before they are due to be changed (about 8 years or 80,000 miles for my comfort zone, every other belt change), and so would not want to take the risk.. But for a DIY owner on a budget they may be worth taking the risk if they are happy to accept it. I am a bit spooked that there are plastic impellor 944 water pumps out there.

My "pattern" replacement pump from ECP has a plastic impeller -personally I can't see a problem-it's a modern material in a nasty place for iron or steel given the duty cycle. The one I took off had a metal impellor which was basically shot but the pump bearings were OK-sadly the pump wasn't the source of the squealing noise-that was eventually traced to the metal sleeve around the OPRV becoming loose when engine up to temperature and oscillating rapidly producing what to all extents & purposes sounded like the pump going.

Jon You do realise that all genuine Porsche pumps for 944, 968 are refurbished ones That's why they have the AX on the part number My man gives a lifetime warranty on his work if you are interested I will send you one of the 944 68mm impeller ones Im about to get fixed so you can inspect it, I'm sure your opinion would be appreciated by all on here He has been doing pumps for 40 years current price for a Genuine Porsche Exchange Unit £554.00

Sorry I didnt realise you were after the old pumps in my previous reply. I believe I still have two with the plastic impellors in the garage. Do you still want these ?
