ORIGINAL: Waylander You do realise that all genuine Porsche pumps for 944, 968 are refurbished ones That's why they have the AX on the part number current price for a Genuine Porsche Exchange Unit £554.00
Not a lot of people realise that AX on a part number means exchange, which is then assumed as rebuilt or remanufactured, but is just that it is an exchange part, normally a new part but with a cheaper price / surcharge in exchange for Porsche getting the old part back. The reason they want the old part back is not normally so they can rebuild it, but so they can take it out of circulation to squash the aftermarket finding as many cores to rebuild. Which is a bit of a fail, because the price of the AX waterpump is still more than an aftermarket new pump, so if the aftermarket wanted cores, they would just do it themselves, but even LASO and other makes do not re-use cores but new castings. Interestingly, the exchange parts from Porsche include new engines, where there used to be or still is a £1500 surcharge on the old Boxster engine, but back at the factory the only ones which were stripped down were warranty returned engines, all the other engines which are returned to them are scrapped except for a sample from each batch to inspect for trends in failures, but I knew a few years ago, even the ones which were stripped and inspected ended up being condemned to scrap. I would not poo poo the idea of rebuilding them, i think it is a great money saving idea and as the number of 944's out there decrease, the amount of interest from Porsche and the aftermarket in making waterpumps for them will also decrease, so one day, your rebuilt ones might be the only option. If you want waterpumps, I usually keep a few used ones spare in case Porsche start charging me the surcharge that they periodically do, or if they ask for some back, but I can probably spare a few. Good luck with your venture.

Hi Jon thanks for the clarification on the AX on the part numbers, this is not a venture for me to make any money in fact its costing me money at the moment. the idea is to have a place that can produce quality refurbished pumps that every one can send there parts to and be assured they will last. 1 or two late 78mm cores would be good to get sent, the bearings and seals are common to some other pumps but I don't know which he has kept that info to himself, he used to do a lot for various indies up in the north but with the event of plastic impellers he stopped, he is more than keen to restart the service even to the point of producing new steel impellers. as soon as I get one done and back I will send it down to you for evaluation. the list he can do is 944S2/968 944 2.5 (68mm) 928 924 the only thing is currently they must have steel impellers and they must be in good shape. Martin

Well there is a lot of people running 944's on a tight budget who on the one hand will want to replace their waterpump, but on the other hand (especially in the case of a lux perhaps) will know they can find a used engine on ebay for not very much money if it all goes wrong, so I certainly do not think it is a crazy idea at all.. Instead I think it will help a lot of people out. Just don't put yourself in a liability pickle... Unfortunately it is the world we live in where someone can get sued just for trying to be helpful I will see what waterpumps I have, I know I will have lots of 68mm ones, but should have some 78's around, even if they are attached to core engines waiting to be rebuilt.

Right If anyone wants to try out the rebuild service, please post your pumps to FAO Paul Unit 1 Central Trading Estate, Cable Street, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England, WV2 2RJ please include your name and address in the box, the cost is £75.00 plus VAT plus Postage.

Could some friendly mod put this address in the FAQ's or DIY section - thanks! Oli.

Has anyone been running these rebuilt pumps for long enough to get an idea how reliable they are?

The guy has been rebuilding pumps for 40 years, I think if they were crap he would have gone out of business long ago, and certainly not offer a lifetime warranty. This is a new thing on here and no one has been running them, if you are a bit sceptical you may have to wait a year or two. You could ask Wibble for some more detailed pictures as he is the first to get one refurbished, I have sent him all I can and so far they have all been 68mm pumps. So the turnaround should be a bit quicker soon, possibly even exchange.

This is a niche engineering business building pumps. Cheap 'ebay' pumps and alike, then I would question reliability.
