Well ......

Second hand engine, change over the sparkly bits and jobs a good un'.

Congrats on having the first half a V6 conversion running though!

I think most of the time, the Conrod would smash the block to bits in this situation, so take it as a good omen!

The car has latent value but little current value...so why sell it. Any money you got for it would have to be split up any way. You need to be reducing your nett worth not increasing it. In which case, blowing up the engine was perhaps the best thing you could do at the moment. [;)]

As someone who had an ex-wife (I guess I still have?) I can confirm there is significant satisfaction to be had doing something that would annoy her. The Churchillian gesture is far from dead.

Hi Wizard..Really sorry about the car...get her SORN`d and moved away from home...a nice dry store somewhere and take some time working on the next move (new engine)...spending further ÂŁ0000`s now won`t help other domestic issues. And selling her cheap will only please the soon-to-be-ex.

Poverty at these times can be a real negotiating asset but don`t get rid of the car, hide her ;-) Been there twice (Maritally that is!) and once blew an engine (Triumph Dolomite).

Hope you keep us posted, oh by the way, secure email access is important in times of domestic strife...[8|]

Graeme, thanks for that ebay find. I shall look into it.
I take it the turbo blockhead is no different to a standard 8V.

I am making arrangements to have the car stored at a family members garage until I can see how finances are going to work out. Not sure yet, but some selling off of other interests may be used to fund a rebuild.

I am fairly fortunate (I suppose) as I do not use the car as a daily runner as I am within walking distance to work.
I might have to buy a 'jalopy' to get about in, but the last time I tried this I ended spending more cash on that then my project. (I hope all metro's have got to a rusty hell!)

I have discussed with Roger why the engine ended up like this. From what Roger can see is that the damage may have been done over a period of time as the scores in the block are described as being rounded off whereas if it had been catastrophic te scores would be more roug. What casued it could range from detonation, overheating fuel starvation etc.

During the cold weather I did notice a clicking noise when on WOT at higher speed. I could not tell exactly where its origins were but it seemed to come form the wastegate area. I assumed it was the valve opening and closing very quickly as the EBC managing the upper boost.(?)

My boost was set at 1.2bar with a automatic reduction of 10% if exceeded. On the Dyno this showed 17psi.

At this time I do regret not getting a proper AFR or boost guage.

The head is different at least in terms of coated exhaust ports, possibly different size also. Block could be stronger in the Turbo to I imagine. Pistons obviously are different.

I will have a very good bottom end available from the end of april As the head is off you can check out the bores.
It holds fantastic oil pressure too. Always been run on Porsche recommended lubes.
Drop me a mail if you could be interested otherwise i will just stick it somewhere out of the way for stock

The head may not be an issue.

Yes the 951 head has coated ports but there is a view (from SimonP and Jon) that the coating was a bit of overkill from Porsche when turbocharging was still in it's infancy. As long as you have proper sodium filled valves you should be ok. My own car has a 2.7 head with no coated ports

Time will tell []

Hi, commiserations, missed this before, bummer, get it running again with second hand engine, unless you want it to go for pennies,
Good luck!
Tony

Elliot - unfortunately it was not Tesco or Morrisons, I usually put in the Optimax/V Power concoction.

Wizard,
Just a thought that it may have been some of the iffy batch of fuel in the South of England.
Tommo sound promising, hopefully you can work something.

Failing that - why don't you get any 2.5 litre engine, and run it without the turbo until you are ready to transplant a proper replacement. Just don't use the intercooler etc but leave it installed. The wastegate will stay shut anyway. The engine management is a grey area for me, but some of the lads on here will give you a steer, I reckon you will make it run quite easily. The down side is you get two labour cost hits to achieve the repair.

I hate to see a Turbo S sick.

Good Luck
George

Very sad to hear of the car's demise. My car is back on the road next week for the first time since Nov '06 after spinning a #2 bearing so I know how you feel. Some ebc's can have a tendency to boost spike and what oil have you been using?
You can sleeve the motor and retain your block as some of us have done and you should be able to have the head rebuilt without a problem so there is definitely no reason why you can't have your car back on the road again once you've saved the $$$. Lot's of info available on various sites.
Best of luck.

Don't forget to start a new thread when you get it back Patrick [8D][8D] I'm dying to hear how it goes.

Sorry for going off-topic [&o]
